    gear selector problem

Having trouble selecting 1st gear. Had a bit of an incident at some traffic lights the other day which would have been very bad if there was a car behind me... reverse is being selected without me pushing down on the stick. And after being in reverse I cant select 1st gear, having to pull away in 2nd which isn't good. I'm assuming I just need new gear selector. Just wondered if anyone else had experienced this, is it a common thing?
    Cheers, Alan

Is it a 6 speed box you have? it may be the lockout has worn out and needs re aligning

Could be the ball joint at the bottom of the gear lever. The nylon ball on the lever sits in a rubber mounted cup thingy. The rubber between the metal housing and the plastic 'cup' deteriorates and detaches itself allowing excessive movement of the lever which effectively bypasses the reverse lockout. I had this on my 6 speed ABY - it was hard to tell whether you were in first or reverse. You can get to it from inside the car by taking out the centre console etc. Once you can see the bottom of the lever try selecting first or reverse and you will probably see the plastic/nylon 'cup' the ball sits in at the bottom of the lever lifting up. If it is this you should be able to buy a new housing and refit the lever into it. It cost me about £40 ish and it was perfect afterwards. Here's a pic of the part I'm talking about.

I actually bought it from Vagparts but of course you can't do that now - an Audi dealer should still be able to supply it but it will probably be a bit more expensive. According to the receipt the part number is 8A0711334.

Problem now sorted! It was indeed the same problem, on removing the old cup I found it was detached somewhat from the metal plate. Got the part for £38 so thanks for the help guys, saved me a lot of time/money!

Ive got a problem with My Shifter, I cant seem to select reverse gear.
Box only takes 1st gear no matter what i try.

I somehow think it is related to a similar problem as this thread..
Anyone can shed some light on this ?

                    Broken down rubber

Bodge repair : screw two stainless screws about 1.5" long into the sides of the unit, taking the place of the broken down rubber. It worked a treat and gear selection is now smooth and positive, well at least for a while

I was looking for a photo of the ball joint and scoket near the gear box bell housing. But thank you.
