Hi. I have a s2 avant from 94. When I drive in 1st gear it sounds exactly as if I am in reverse. I bought it recently and it had the noise when I bought it. Previous owner has changed the clutch to a new. Can a too cheap clutch be the problem or is it the box? Anyone who can help me a bit? Cheers Anders.

1st gear can be an issues, I think HPMuirt had the same issues, required a new gearbox. Just don't go doing many launches until you can get it rebuilt with the wider first gear... not cheap. Other options are anpotehr S2 box with know wide 1st, an RS2 box or a B5 S4 box (DSY I think?). S4 boxes are bulletproof but require a bit of research to make sure they fit right as they have a built-in oil pump and external cooler AFAIK.Cheers'en, AndyC

Don't know what you mean by wrong clutch. If it was for a lesser powered variant then you'd get it slipping under load, if it wasn't balanced or centred correctly then it'd vibrate. Whining sounds like a gearbox to me but then I've not seen or heard ti so can only suggest...Cheers'en, AndyC
