    single mass conversion problem.

I've just been outside trying to get my lightend 7A flywheel to fit on the golf.

I bolted the flywheel on the crank then shortend the dowels along with the bolts and threw the spacer plate away.

Before i tightend up all the bolts i tried the clutch pedal just to make sure all was ok unfortunately the clutch just sank to the floor.

After investigation all i can figure is the thrust bearing does not come far enough out to fully engage the clutch.

All i can find wrong is the plunger rod has split the plastic at one end.

This must be a commom thing but the car has been running fine with the dual mass pressure plate, you can see the end has a burr so it's been like this for a while.

Hopefully a new rod will sort the clutch out.

Did you remove the spacer between the block and gearbox?

I have done the same as you by the sound of things and have had no issues with clutch engagement... perhaps you need to adjust the master cylinder rod to give it more length?

Well the rod that goes from the pedal to the MC anyway. It's the bit that usually breaks on ABYs.

The clutch plate is the same so i reused it and i did change the pressure plate.

I thought the release bearing was the same?

no no, to convert dual mass to single mass, there is 4 differeces: SM flywheel, SM clutch, SM pressure plate and SM pressure bearing. Single mass flywheel is much thinner than dual mass, so the lost of lenght, pressure bearing is bigger and thicker. single mass clutch is different, it has springs on the clutch, dual mass one does not have. and finally the pressure plate, if you put SM clutch and DM pressure plate, you cant get your clutch work, cuz pressure plate presses clutch springs against to the pressure plate ears ( those things wich press the plate, you know ).

                        sry for bad english
you dont have to change the work cylinder, it suits well, due loss of ball bearing lenght, the pedal slams to the floor and clutch gets never touched.

I have a helix clutch kit and the pressure plate is the same part no on both DM and SM kits.

So all i changed was the pressure plate.

I had no idea the release bearing was taller, this would explain my problem.

Does anyone have a picture of the two different bearings for comparison?

The release bearing is the same. 5 speed, 6 speed, dual mass, single mass.

I had similar trouble when I first bled my clutch. The pedal just went to the floor. After a few pumps of the pedal, fluid leaked from the bell housing confirming my fear. The slave cylinder rod had popped out.
I separated the engine and gearbox once again, measured everything on my original 5 speed setup and checked it against the new 6 speed setup. Everything checked out ok. So I put it all back together and now it feels fine. Very strange.
