I've got the same problem and have been living with it for a whilst.
1st i changed the slave for a new one.
Then i changed the rubber hose to the slave for a stronger one as the original felt soft.
Then i replaced the master, the rod was slightly bent, it helped a little and the pedal doesnt get stuck on the floor anymore but the pedal is still very light.
I guess the new master is the problem.
I bought the Master from Vagparts so i got no recourse i guess.

        *BUMP*

I know I am probably going to answer my own question a bit here, but here goes anyway.

Update to this problem: The clutch now gets stuck to the floor. However, you can pull it up with your foot and begin pumping it a few times. 10 - 20 pumps seems to have the clutch working again properly with the correct biting point. The action is still smooth and true, the clutch bites correctly and the car drives normally.

It seems to be worse after it has stood for a while. (Most of the time these days...)

I still have not had a look under the lower dash panel as I have a bad case of sciatica and can't really do a lot at the moment. Today was the first time I have driven the car in about three weeks...

Does this point to a very small leak and the clutch is self bleeding when I pump the pedal???

        Any advice appreciated..

        Cheers,

        Steve.

I'd definately bleed the clutch properly as a first step Steve - could be air in the system and pumping the pedal is comperssing the air and allowing the hydraulics to work properly again perhaps?

Exactly the same as my Golf there Steve... 3 times in the past 18 months, and each time a replacement master cylinder was required The second time the garage found a weeping pipe, replaced it and the master cylinder lasted alot longer! However, just had failure #3 last month... master cylinder was tested and yup it was knackered

Not to make you lose hope, but it could be worse... as above I'd try bleeding and check everywhere for weeping pipes where it could be drawing air in, hopefully you won't get to needing to change cylinders.

                Thanks chaps.

Last night I was diagnosed with a prolapsed disc in my back! At least I now know what is wrong with me, even if there is a fair bit of rehabilitation.

Once I am back to full fitness I will check the master cylinder operation and then the pipe and see what I find.

Don't hold your breath though, I can only sit in a chair for about half an hour at the moment, can't walk or bend over...

                Cheers,

                Steve.

Hmmm. The cocodomol are rather nice aren't they?

Seriously though, this is the worst pain I have ever felt Horrible. I just need to stick to my recovery plan rigidly and I should start to make progress. Finger crossed.

                    Cheers,

                    Steve.
