    Refitting slave slave cylinder.

Can anyone tell me if it is possible to refit the slave cylinder with the gearbox still in place? This is on a 5 speed box should that make any difference.

The reason I ask is that I've just replaced the clutch, wrestling to get the box back on myself was difficult enough at the the time and decided not to fit the slave at this time. I'll probably regret making this decision.

    Thanks.

That's how I've done it. Fitted the slave after. Is it connected hydraulically?

Hi Stu, That sounds encouraging, yes it uses a hydraulic system. The slave is connected to the brake master cylinder via a flexi hose.

If you have it disconnected or have the bleed screw open, with a hose on it to direct fluid away, it should go in easier.

Keeping the bleed screw open sounds like a good idea. I was thinking about the possibility or removing the slave temporarily and decanting the brake fluid before reattaching. That way I would be compressing air rather than fluid. Then I could bleed it afterwards.

Your method sounds less complicated (and possible less messy) to me and therefore gets my vote.

Im doing this atm too, its a pita to get it back in, i cant even line up the hole for the bolt, access is so tight and pushing it in with one hand from underneath the car is really not easy. Im going to try to compress the cylinder first somehow. That would help.

Hi Bo, you have my sympathy. The factory manual states that there is a bolt available with a tapered end to help with the initial thread engagement. I couldn't see this listed when I was putting together my parts order.

Now that you mention the troubles you are having to get the push rod compressed, it sounds like it might be best just to disconnect the slave afterall and plug the end of flexi hose and try it that way.

I'm wondering if there is any possibly that the push rod could be compressed to expel all the air from the cylinder and then temporarily inserting a bolt with the correct thread pitch to act as a plug to keep push rod in the retracted position under vacuum?

I've still got my old slave cylinder I can try this on to see if it works.

Undoing the hydraulic pipe is the best way, but it will drain your reservoir down to the inlet pipe level. So be prepared for that, it's amazing how much fluid is in there when it's running down your arm, BTDT.

There should be a sort of cup on the 'box that the back of the slave sits in, before you try to stick the bolt in.

                  Got it back in!

Hope i never have to do that job again!
I used a bit of silk to hold the piston in, when it was compressed it was quite easy to line up the hole for the bolt.

It wasnt easy getting the silk out again though after the cylinder was in place. I hope I got it all and that there is none left holing the cylinder in.

I just cracked off the bleed nipple when I did mine and it was a doddle, fluid needed changing anyway as it was black !
