Late ABY (CGR) 'boxes use the same wide, flexible 1st gear (01E 311 105 H) as RS2 (CRB) 'boxes.

so what your saying is if you have the late CGR ABY gearbox,it should be thesame wide first gear as the RS2 gearbox.

You need to have a newer gearbox housing which allows the wider gear to fit to the box (the L groove) , but this is really unecessary in my opinion, the weakest link in our gearboxes is the synchronisation, which brakes easily (or not easily but the weakest part in the gearbox anyway) have you ever seriously heard of anyone that's broken the first gear? sure the second and third gear, but that's because they shift to hard on high powered and high reving engines, causing crashed gears due to poor synch. One S2 here in sweden have 900 hp and has run about a year with a 92 s4 gearbox 6 speed with the narrow first gear.

And remember, ONLY stock gearbox oil, the redline oil is crap in our boxes, you can use redline in the diff but never in the gearbox. It's too thick for the synchro to work properly in high rev applications.

thank's for the advise mate,i don't doubt the durability of our narrow first gear.just wondering whether it can be done

Hi. Prosty: My 1st gear is sounding like I am in reverse is it because the synchronisation is broken in some way? I can put it in to gear and shift without problems. Sorry to interrupt your post David

I've had that sound in 2-3 6-speed boxes. Never broke it even the sound was very clear and heard from inside the car. Some ppl say that this noise comes from a box with a wider gear, but I've heard it on cars with a narrow one too. This is in my experience nothing to worry about, but I'm just a home user with good patience and a lot of spare parts at home, remember this .

This is not a synch issue from what I know, it could mean the teeth on the first gear is worn, or that the oil is bad??. This can occur if you FORCE 1st gear when the car is moving too fast.. Since the parts are so expensive in these boxes, I would just keep on driving until / or if it brakes. I made about 100-150 starts with my S2 avant with this whining sound, and the only thing that broke was the rear diff, after 100+ starts

Okay. Thanks alot Prosty. That is very helpful. It changes gear very easily so I think it will last for a good while. Maybe I will change the oil for starters and see if it helps. Which oil is the best to use for it?

                              The difference

You can also try to find a EDU gearbox from the S4tt & A6tt. It uses the 105J 1st wide gear and fits the S2/RS2 without mods
