I Think My Clutch has just given up the Ghost

Had the S2 for about a month now and all was going well up until about an hour ago. Took off in first and went to change up but no luck. I think the pressure plate may have given out. Cant now get the car into any gears while the engine is running. pressing the clutchpedal does little except make a slight whirring noise.
    Here's the story:

A couple of weeks ago I notice while holding the clutch in there was a whirring noise (probs thrust bearing) and the clutch was very close to the floor. Akso under heavy acceleration, when you dip the clutch to change up there was a bit of a thump from it(hard to explain, I thought maybe a mount was on its way out).

I have checked the fluid and it seems fine, no leaks from the slave or clutch master cyl.

It does look like I'm gonna have to drop the gearbox out of this and change the clutch doesnt it. A bit skint too after just buying it was on my way home from buying 4 new tyres for it (can't complain, got 4 brand new mitchelins for £200 off a mate).

Anyone advise where is best to buy a clutch?

BTW, I went back out to it and got the wife to push the clutch pedal, the flexi hose moves with the pedal and I can hear a clicking sound in the bellhousing so it really does look like somethings gone wrong with the pressure plate.

think knight rider s4 used something like this but not sure, if u can get one recommended by people on this forum save taking it out when it gives up again.

I had something like this with mine, i managed to drive mine for 3 months with the clutch like that till it fully gave up.

Me thinks the guy who sold it maybe knew it was on it's way out, just never noticed until I drove ita week or so. Ah well, do it right and it'll do for a while.

From the symptoms you describe it sounds like the one of the springs on the friction disc has broken and is locking the clutch, as you suspect it's fuked. Had the same thing with my Corrado G60, clutch felt odd for a few hundred miles then a bang and it locked up, no clutch what so ever, constant drive. Striped it to find all the springs from friction disc in pieces inside the flywheel/clutch assembly wedging the whole lot solid.

Sachs clutches are very reliable, probably what I'd go for.

euro car parts list the sachs clutch for around £140, I'll phone the local branch in the morning and see have they got one.

                cheers guys

Now I'm confused. They list 2 clutch kits with different sized plates. which one does my car (95 6 speed aby avant)?

Aren't these essentially the same part? The only difference being the manufacturer (and the price of course).

Yeah, for the sake of 30 quid I'd definitely go for the Sachs over a Valeo kit, especially if your planning on a bit more power in future.

                              error

I agree, but what worries me is the 12mm less plate dia listed on the euro car parts website for the sachs clutch. Will it fit? What is the correct size? 228 or 240mm? Will they both fit?
