Hmmm, that's confusing, I would expect them both to be 240mm. Just a though but have you tried giving Pete @ quattro corner a ring, he's normally good on price and you can be 100% sure of getting the right parts.

Cheers, Just phoned pete, he hasnt got any in stock but confirms the 228mm plate is completely wrong. Makes sense as local euro parts store said the part number I gave off the site was wrong, also explains the extra price for the one he quoted for. I think I'll confirm the euro car parts plate size and order from them, they are £30 cheaper than quattro corner and I won't have shipping.
Thanks Guys.1996 Audi S6 Avant.

No worries, thought 228mm sounded wrong. Glad you got it sorted, are you planning on changing it your self? If so set a weekend aside as it's quite a time consuming job.1990 B3 2.0 80 quattro.

You might want to think about doing the Slave cylinder while you are in there. Much much easier with the 'box off...

Thats the clutch ordered and will be picked up tomorrow. I have a week and a bit off starting next wednesday so I'll tackle it then. I had thought about the slave cyl but I'll be honest - I'm skint! Plus would an after market part be any better than the genuine (albeit old) one thats on there?
I'll leave my opel manta outside for a few days
, that way I can use my garage and have access to air ratchets, impact wrenches and the like (plus I can have the heater and the radio on while I work

Well guys, the gearbox is out and I can get a good look at th clutch setup. The plate is 100% as expected, the pressure plate looks OK bar some wearing down at the edge of the springs. The main culprit looks like the thrust bearing. Both the old and new one are marked sachs, "made in germany" but the new one is about 2mm taller than the old one as it has a thicker contacting plate which looks like a hard plastic. I'm wondring has the old one broken up (although theres no sign of it.
Here's a couple of pics of it:
Height difference inthe 2:

Surface of the old one, well grooved:

I'm a boit confused over the kits mind, the original kit has audi plate, sachs pressure plate and thrust bearing. The new one is in an LUK box and has a sachs pressure plate and bearing.1996 Audi S6 Avant.

don't worry,LUK and SACHS are essentially the same company and they swap and share bits often.I have come across that several timesComment

Well, I think the clutch problem has been sorted now, was able to reverse the car out of the garage and drive back in tonight, exhaust is hanging a bit low and scrapped going out of the garage so I'll adjust that tomorrow.
Took a lot longer than expected but then I ran into problems with subframe bushes among a few other unforseen problems. Went well until my 3yrs old son came out to help and ended up denting (wee dent) the passengers door with a spanner
Didn't even know what he did worng. After I calmed down I explained to him " spanners only touch the rusty bits"
. I dont think he'll do it again.
