    Gearbox oil, what to use?

Anyone who has changed the oil can you post up what you used and how it well it worked? Especially in regard to shifting when cold.

I picked up a can of Fuchs oil from my local motor factors but i'm not happy with it. Just had a look on OpieOils and its the cheapest one listed, and only semi-synthetic which i didnt realise at the time

I recall a lot of people tried aftermarket gearbox oils on here but most still found the one sold by the stealer gave the best performance (from cold/shifting etc).....

Performance guys say, that MT90 by redline is the king. However I was running castrol hypoid, neste (some crappy low grade) for years, now am running kroon-oil fully-synthetic. Never noticed difference. When it is really cold outside (like -20) every damn oil becomes like thick epoxy. So if you are not going high hp and track or high speed abuse - any normal grade oil will be ok. Not sure about fuchs thou, heard not so good responses about it, especially in the cold.

That is the problem, very notchy gear changes until the box warms up. When i say cold its still between 0-10c outside, it hasn't got to the freezing temps yet.

I have a gut feeling Redline is overkill, and maybe a bit of snake oil mixed in. Tempted to just buy the Audi stuff unless there is a proven replacement that works as well.

I'm using that Titan Gear-Syn in my 01A Mark, I found it made the box loads smoother and shifts perfectly, even in the cold, improved my box......... but then i did empty it of the original OE oil which had bits of twig and old shopping trolleys in it etc.

Why is it they can make every grade and performance type you like but can't produce one that doesn't make the cat throw up at ten yards?

I'm using this too and never had any problems with shifting when cold.

So I should eat my words back . As I've said, I've only heard things, never seen it personally. There's also probability, that someone just sold lot of fake oil with this brand name glued to it (it happens sometimes here).

                      Hi Sau

That happens everywhere. We price match everyone but Ebay as there is too much of a risk of the oil being a bit dodgy on there. Don't get me wrong, there are legit sellers, but there is a lot of illegal oil on Ebay.

                      Cheers
