    Hi,

Can someone pls confirm which tranny is fitted to a 91 3B?

    Is it the 01A or a 5 speed 01E?

    Charlie Smith's site - http://www.elektro.com/~audi/01E/ind1.html

There is some info on a 'flexible' necked down mainshaft fitted to some early S2s. This can be added to the debate about widened, hardened gears on the 5/6 speed boxes.

    Cheers
    Steve.

To save another thread I thought i'd add to this one.

What is the gearbox code in an ABY or is their more than one? At this stage it's mostly curiosity. Also what gear & diff oil do people use?

Cheers, anything to look out for on them? Mine seems fine but want it to stay that way.

Thinking of changing oil so curious what should go into it. I have a litre of Redline heavy shock left over from a big power Skyline I had but that seems like over kill!

Car is in the air at the moment so seems like the ideal time.

Might be a new record for thread resurrection !

Have a search on the forum for gearbox oil - it has been done before - I am sure.

Any high quality fully synthetic GL-4. Must be GL-4. Don't be fooled by universal oils claiming to be GL-4 & GL-5 compliant.
I made that mistake and luckily GT500 corrected me, the GL-5 oil is too slippery and will trash the shift hubs & syncros over time.

eeeek! I've recently had my box oil changed over to "Millers Oils CRX 75w-90 NT Competition full synthetic". Have I made a f**k up here or is this ok? The description in Opie oils site says its ok so must be true?!

It was Opie that I listened to

The box shifted fine with the GL5 in, but if it's slowly knackering the synchro's it's no good.

Going to get the box out this weekend and have Fuchs Sintofluid 75W80 GL5 oil, should I go change this for a semi synthetic 75W90 GL4 & GL5 grade oil?

Fully synthetic GL4 is what you need (75W90)
