  • Two questions...

Hi guys, long time no post.

A couple of questions related to new problems for The Kitten:

She's jumping out of third gear now, quite violently, which I understand to be an internal problem.

What I need to know is:

    1) Who / where to get this prob sorted.

    OR

    2) I have a 1990 2.3 10v CQ, still, and was wondering if the five speed in that is the same as the one in Kitty? A suitable donor?

I think maybe it's a good time to consider conrod bearing update if the Kitty is coming apart!

      The car is a 1991 3b which IIRC is a 5 speed?

Yes Caterpillar, Teutonic Kitten is the car's name! It's a long story - "Atomic" Kitten (English girlie group) becomes "Teutonic" Kitten (Germanic technology car) ...ah, well!! And yes Stick, it's a 1991 3B and it is a 5 speed. Cat, if what you've told me is correct, you've probably saved me and Kitty a bit of money - cheers geezer!

It's crazy - I must have the only car in the world with a six speed gearknob attached to a five speed gearbox, which only has four functional gears...

Anyway if things are coming out of Kitty I now need the answer to my other questions in the engine forum, about the right bits to put inside the 3B in preparation for increased boost!

Box from 1990 Coupe q, KV / NG will fit Kitten, but top end may suffer. Good thing though, acceleration through the gears may be marginally quicker. KV / NG box ratio is lower than 3B (final drive is the same @ 4.11:1), equating to about 21.3mph / 1000rpm. 3B is approx. 24.5mph / 1000rpm.

box from 1988 will fit, anyones.but chec the gearcode before you bye one.stands on the cluthcover edge, betveen the upper enginebolts, fx: AHA,or 7Z.that is the final drive and Year.....the 6speed will fit too,but you need the gearshiftunit in the car,and the shafts, they are different.if you take the diesel 6 speeds, they will pull togeather for the Nm too....

              Hi there,

Thanks again Cat! Already got a car to donate g/box (Blue Kitten, TK's companion).

Siena, thanks for that info, if Blue Kitten's g/box is ok I think I might be in business!

Just those engine mods to arrange now...

If you find that the 10 valver box is no good. Try a company called Gearchange, Somerset. I use them for work and they also rebuilt the box on my 3B.

Any 01A quattro 'box should 'fit' but whether they have suitable gear ratios or can handle the torque of the S2 is another matter...

Would the S2 box be significantly different? I would have thought not, but it is fair to say that first gears always take a fair old hit as they have to endure a high torque load. So, it would be true that any ratio lower than the existing set would take even more torque.

Anyone have any recommendations? The CQ box is of course free to me, as Blue Kitten is sat at home next to Teutonic Kitten! Maybe just use it as a stop gap while the other is being serviced?

I would use it as a stop gap. Trust me, when these cars are tuned the 5 speed box doesn't enjoy it. Now on my 2nd rebuild. Thats with only 370ish bhp. I dread to think how often this will need doing once the engine is rebuilt, with near on 420bhp!
