    1st gear notchy when cold

Just thought I'd mention this as it is something I have noticed during the cold and as this is my first winter with the S2 I don't know whether it normal or not!

From a cold start the gearbox feels very notchy and it is a lot harder than normal to select 1st, you don't have to force it or even push that hard but it is noticeably worse. But, as soon as the car has warmed up it is fine. So my guess was that the gear box oil needs to be warm to work best.

Or is this something I should worry about and look into further?

    Cheers

Sounds about right! Mine's notchy as hell in the current cold weather. Changing the oil can help a little if it's not been done in a while but it'll be a minor change. As long as it works well when warm then just be careful and use the old Golf trick of slotting it into second then first.

as said an oil change can help but really the oil is like treacle in these temps - i changed my diff for my spare one yesterday and it took 45 minutes to drain out fully
