    Help with noises

Thought I'd start a new thread to look for some advice.

I have a loud rumbling / droning noise which appears to be coming from the front nearside. Both front wheel bearings where changed within the last 2000 miles so I don't believe it is that. It all started after a change of tyres at the front and seemed to go from no noise to what I have now suddenly rather than over a period of time.

First thing I noticed was a thin line of shinyness on the brake bell so I removed the pads and used a grinder to trim the backing plate. No difference and I believe this to be a bit of a red herring.

That corner then also developed an intermittent squeal.

I have jacked up the front left corner and run that wheel in 1st, 2nd and third gears. I have removed the wheel, caliper and disc and the noise is still the same. It is really difficult to tell where the noise is coming from, wheel end or gearbox end of the driveshaft. The squeal is definitely from the wheel end. The driveshaft appears to be very slightly bent but I believe it has been for some time without these noises.

I have bought a second hand driveshaft complete with cv's which I intend to fit to see if its a problem with one of these components. I've released the outer cv and undone the bolts to the inner.

First question is how does the inner come away? Does it just pull towards the outside of the car? Which part of the joint splits and does someone have a picture they can upload?

Second question is, does anyone have any suggestions regarding the noise? Really concerned that it could be gearbox related rather than something outside.

    Thanks

    Alistair

Well I've found it. The wheel bearing that was fitted less that 3000 miles ago has failed. Took the driveshaft out o the hub and then turned the hub by hand. Wow, feels like the bearings are octagonal. Really rough.

never had a bearing go in such a way that steering direction made absolutely no difference. And the noise was a lot worse than any I've experienced before.

Ah well, at least it's found and I already have the discs for pulling the hub out etc. Should be easier this time.

This normally happens after a whack up a kerb... Its always a good feeling to find the problem though aint it...

Well, I've just buckled two wheels on a pothole but that came after the noises.

So no real need for the driveshaft! At least you can swap the slightly bent shaft

Thanks Trist that's my intention. Just need to sort out the bearing. It should arrive Fri morning courtesy of Pete at Quattro Corner. Just hope I can get time at work on the press.

Maybe back on the road saturday fingers crossed.

I've got photos of the pothole and am going to look into claiming from the council.

Can someone tell me the differences between the RS2 and the S2 avant driveshafts and cv's It looks like the only difference is the outer cv. Can someone confirm?

                  Thanks

Still need help on this. What's the difference between the driveshafts on an S2 avant and an RS2, if any? Are the nearside and off side the same?

                    Thanks
