    Driveshaft Dimensions

Whilst looking for the source of my recent wheel bearing problems I discovered that my front nearside driveshaft was running very slightly out. I managed to source a replacement from an RS2 but when comparing it to mine (S2 Avant), I found the RS2 shaft to be shorter.

Can someone confirm this is the case? If not, are the offside and nearside shafts the same length? Could it be an offside shaft?

Both inner and outer cv joints appeared to be the same.

    Thanks

    Alistair

The shaft I sent you was the NS from an ABY Avant. The shafts are different in length by about 2 cm from memory, however if you know which one came from me you have a control point!

I thought the one you sent me was an RS2 n/s. My car is an ABY avant and my shaft is about 2cm longer than yours, lol.

When you say 2cm difference, is that between the off and nearsides or between RS2 and ABY Avant?

        Hey there

Not sure where the RS2 reference came from lol... http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Audi-80-S2-ABY...9#ht_500wt_976

Now I'm sure the RS2 and S2 have the same drive-shafts, as the gearbox is the same except wide first gear. Now the only other explanation is that my car or or your car has had the shafts off before and have been put on the wrong way round??!! The OS shaft was removed and fitted to the OS of an Avant which is happily driving around at the mo, however this doesnt mean its right. I'm sure someone on here will know which way round they go. There is a thread on here saying which way they go, but I cant find it!!

Must have got confused as I think I was looking at an RS2 shaft when I spotted yours. Easily done, confused that is.

          Couple of options here then.

If offside is longer than nearside, mine must have bean put back together the wrong way round at some point or its had the nearside replaced with the wrong shaft.

If nearside is longer, the one you sent was an offside and yours had the wrong shaft fitted or they were the wrong way round.

          Can anyone shed some light?

They are offset diagonally... N/S/F is same length as O/S/R.... I did have all the dimensions of type85 shafts somewhere but cant find the file. Fromt memory its:

              Long: N/S/F and O/S/R (7.4kg)
              Short: O/S/F and N/S/R (7.1kg)

If that's right, it looks like I've been shafted, lol.

Trist, do you have the other side available?
