AFAIK it's just the output flanges that are differnent and you can swap those of your S2 diff. I know a lot of people try to get a 7A diff because it will have had an easier life.

Also afaik if you get 7a rear driveshafts as well they are thicker than normal s2 one's for some reason.

the size of the axle flanges and the breather is all the differences ETKA shows.
seems the 4cyl ones got 90mm flanges, the CQ N/A got 100mm flanges, and the 3B/ABY (turbo i would surmise) has 108mm. i cannot confirm firsthand this info, it came from ETKA and we didnt have turbo or 4cyl Coupe Quattro in USA. but i have an S2 diff (3B/ABY) with 108mm flanges i had sent from Europe, and i have a couple CQ here in the states. and from what i see they are identical, flanges notwithstanding.
i read it to ask if there is any difference in the two. like is an S2 rear diff stronger than a 7A rear diff. and there is not. they have the same part numbers for all internals for each, S2 and Coupe Quattro with 7A.
so putting in S2 gears into a 7A diff is pointless as they are the same parts, unless one is damaged.
and they do both have the same 4.11:1 final drive, as well.
