The beauty of the early 016 Quattro non torsen systems is that the diff lock is a female mating cog that slides over the differential and output shaft gears (much the same as a synchromesh cog engages). Its then permenantly engaged and can withstand big power.
As said with torsen models you can stop the speed designated disengagement through electrical trickery.
what will it be like to drive an ABY Avant on the daily journey with roundabouts and turn rights, will it mean a bit less understeer and a bit more oversteer, presumably only noticeable at higher velocities or in the wet ?
I would personally leave it alone. Its not nice to drive and will be tail happy when the boost comes on. Will drive like an overpowered rear wheel drive car.
Worst still you will probably prang it in the wet..

Does it make a difference to tyre wear?
Thanks.
I wouldn't do that, car will hop at low speeds, it will chew the tyres up and as DJones says it will be "interesting" to drive.
Disabling the auto unlock is actually quite useful in the snow and can also be a bit of fun, I would not advise diving about with it locked most of the time though.
That said it just disable the auto unlock and you can toggle to your leisure and try it if you so wish.
