Gearbox oil overfill??

My 6 speed box has just swallowed 5 litres of gearbox oil to reach the fill mark, surely this is far to much i was led to believe they hold around 3 litres max.
Can anyone shed any light on this before i bolt it back up?

sounds like a lot - IIRC you fill to 6mm below the filler hole on the 01E?

Its sat at roughly 10mm below the filler hole at the moment, the gearbox was bone dry before i started...

maybe then. once all the nooks are filled.

if it aint coming out it has nowhere else to go.

how sensitive is the box to the fill quantity...was thinking of a quick drain and refill of mine while its up on the stands but dont want to overfill it. ARV box btw also whats the best stuff to put in. Had it refilled years ago by Audiman with some synthetic stuff and seems to have been pretty good but not looking to get all notchy from cold if i can avoid it.

im sure it was something like 2.3 litres for rs2 and 2.5 for s2.
Purely from memory!
Overfilling is not good. Will wear out quicker.

If you over fill it comes out the breather as it foames up. It happens when driving fast eg when testing your top speed. The oil then gets on the exhaust and makes loads of smoke and looks in the mirror like a blow up. Don't ask how I know.... trunk filling worry for a few mins till i figured out wtf. LOL

well yesterday I have the same problem with 01E DGU gerabox (audi s6 plus).
there is info on web that this gearbox need 3.4l of oil , I put 4 liters in it and they need more...??? how?
how to know when is enough? when oil start to came out from fill plug? isn't it?
what to do to put more or what?
