I have similar problem: whine from rear (as I assume from passenger side) when I cornering to the left or when I drive very slowly through rough road. Thought that this problem was because of bad rear passenger side wheel bearing, but after changing it still the same.
Now I'm thinking that this whine can come from inner constant velocity joint because it has a little play comparing with drivers side

or I should consider diff bearing ??

Turns out it was only a wheel bearing. Had it changed for a new one on Friday and everything is now peaceful and quiet.

Funny thing is that the old bearing only started making a different noise on cornering a couple of weeks back. Before that it had been a steady speed related drone.

Had a look at the Central Axles website and it sounds like it one of my diff bearings going so I think it's either a repair job or a secondhand diff for me. Turns out from having a look that my diff does seem to have been weeping some oil.

If I can get a secondhand diff (there is one in the for sale section of the forum) how easy is it to change? Do you have to take the whole rear subframe off or does the diff just unbolt and come out.

If I go for the repair option I'd be interested in hearing any experiences on quality of work and the likely costs.

with diffs you can usually play a tune with them.. another thing they just get more exspensive to fix the longer you leave them .

Central Axles services in the midlands is pretty good and for free they will tell you the problem....

No, but I changed the oil in it a couple of years back and there are no signs of it leaking.

The car will be off to Automark in North Yorkshire (Don't know any garages I can trust down here yet) for a service and MOT in a couple of months so I'll get it looked at then but it's gotten a lot noisier over the past couple of months and I'm worried it'll not last till then.

Unfortunately I'm living in a rented terraced house at the moment and don't have access to my tools or anywhere to work on the car so I can't do much investigation for now. Roll on September when we move into our new house and I get a double garage to play with.

    Any wife/kids sitting back there?

Could be the diff, i have a gearbox with a noisy diff bearing and it dosent change under load, just road speed. Hard to say without hearing it but in my experience wheel bearings rumble, gearbox/diffs whine, and prop center bearing makes a swissshhhh noise when there bad. If your unsure find a garage that will put the car on a lift and run it to find the problem.

Whine From Rear of ABY Avant

I've got a whine coming from the back end of my ABY Avant and I'm struggling to work out where it's coming from. It's been doing it for at least the last 20k miles but is getting a fair bit louder now so I think it's going to become serious quite soon.

It's speed related as it gets louder the faster I go but isn't affected by which gear I'm in or whether I've got power on or not. I would guess it's not the rear diff from this.

There is no increase or decrease in noise on cornering either so I'm not thinking it's wheel bearing either.

Any ideas chaps? Does it sound like the prop centre bearing or am I missing something else?

    Cheers
