    yes

many moons ago my mate had a 100 2.5tdi. it was his dads car as business owner.

the box went after a few years and when the replacement went in it weas found to have 6 gears where the old one had 5.

a big beast and the wrong ratios for 1.8t

you does have some other ratios on 2wd trannys( not transverse one) the easiest to find are the 4,111, then some 3,889, and some does find 3,700.. for the 2wd trannys , it doesnt matter ...but for the q cars, it will do some if the rear end doesn 't have the same..and the hubs for the propchafts, are interchangable..the dieseltrannys are the strongest i think; spec after 95

right. but since he is looking to do it in a FWD setting, the R&P matters nothing to him, other than for gearing purposes. he does not need it to match anything as it is only using one output.

and the hubs for the driveshafts are not interchangeable from 01A (circlip on the end of the splines hold it in) versus the 01E (catheter bolt thru the splines into the diff.)....

This would be my thoughts but gazzaG60 says
          v6 is differnt bnell housing.
Is this correct? Im sure i have seen a cabriolet that was built FWD with a RS2 Motor, this would imply a it fits both??
