aby with 016 box. What flywheel/clutch???

Putting a aby into my URQ with a 016 box. What flywheel do i need and what clutch. I was thinking of a paddle clutch as thats what i run in my diesel golf. A bit sharp but doesnt slip so much. What is the most common flywheel in the UK to get and how much? Anyone have one. Thanks.

You'll be wanting a flywheel from 3B or RR engine - its a single mass affair that is MUCH lighter than the dual-mass ABY/AAN/ADU one. The DM flywheel makes for a smoother drive, but performance is lost and some of that nice edginess you get with the SM flywheel.

You'll need to get shorter flywheel bolts where it mates to the crank (ABY ones are too long) - check the family album or search here for P.Nos...

Sachs do a range of uprated and paddle clutches that work with the 3B flywheel. That project should be a hoot to drive - you are building the combination I would like

Btw flywheel bolts are adviced to be replaced every time.
3B short ones are tightened 100Nm and that's quite much for a M10. ABY long ones 40Nm+180deg and that's helluva lot for M10!

The info I have says the ABY flywheel bolts should be 30Nm + 90degrees - this is for the M10 bolts that are 43mm long - N90705901

I have to recheck this, but my fiend just put back his DM AAN flywheel and IIRC it was 40+180. Could be different between ABY and AAN?

The AAN and ABY use the same bolts - I have the Audi AAN engine manual and it says 30+90

If they use the same bolts they should be torqued to the same amount.

Now it's double checked. Both Autodata and Bentley manual say 40+180. I recommend you to double check too and not to trust these figures fully.
This was also what my friend used. It looked a bit scary when he tightened them as we both were a bit sceptic about tightening M10 bolts this hard.

I have checked and the genuine AAN Audi manual is 30Nm+90degrees - I think someone else needs to check an ABY manual to be sure.

If I remember correctly do these not have the low profile heads - I'm surprised the head doesn't get chewed up with the torque you are applying.

                    Head?

                    They're M10x1 IIRC.

                      Hi!,
Be careful. The RR/3b flywheels are different. The 3b one appears to move the clutch pack further into the bellhousing. I only noticed this when comparing the two side by side. Can't remember, but I think the 3b has the pilot bearing in the flywheel whilst the RR has it in the crank.
At a guess, I would go for the flywheel that matches the gearbox rather than the engine code. As the RR had the 016 that would be the one to go for.

Thanks for the help, so the RR one is the one to get. What do i do with the crank shaft bearing/bush thing then??? Thanks, des.

I meant the top of the bolt - the hex shaped part.

                            Des,
Install it in the rear of the crank. It would be advisable to measure the ID of the crank(inside the flange) and the OD of the input shaft as I think there are two sizes of pilot bearing. The differences in the flywheel are due to the differences in the length of the input shafts I guess. Maybe ETKA can give you more info.
But you see my logic. RR-016 gearbox therefore safe to assume that RR flywheel/clutch is OK. 3b-01A gearbox, different flywheel.

twoqu, seems to make sence. Will measure up the shaft dia on my WR 016 box and also the ABY crank. Thanks, des.
