  • Gearbox leak advice

Hi guys, wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction for a small (hopefully!) new problem.

Right, never had a drip from her before now, but the other week had her out for a nice run and ended up in some prolonged nonsense with an S4. so all good fun and home safely. Knackered my foot so cant drive in the meantime. (differnt incident!) Had some tokens for money off petrol so asked the missus to take the s2 for a fill up. When we got to the garage 2-3 miles away, i could get a faint wiff of that special smell, gearbox oil.
Was stronger when id paid for motion lotion and got back in car and when we got back to the house i noticed a couple of 2p sized drips on the driveway. Had a quick peek under and bottom of box looks damp.

now i cant get under her til my foots better, but wheres my first port of call?

Just arming myself so i can hopefully pin point it quickly.

    Many thanks

could have just foamed over if you're lucky. Failing that, input shaft could be a suspect. Only reason i say that is any gearbox oil leaks i've ever had have been input shaft leaks. except the s2. never had any leaks with this so far "touch wood"

All you can do is visually examine it and track back to possible sources... sometimes tricky as leaks can drag all over the place with the car in motion - but its likely going to be from the most forward / highest point that you can see or feel the sweaty oil. I cannot remember if there is a breather for the gear oil - guess their must be to stop the gear casing from becoming pressurised... maybe a bit of excess oil blew out there as a result of enthusiastic driving ?

Other than a breather - there is only four places where the gearbox oil has an interface with the outside world by way of an oil seal.

1 - the input shaft (already mentioned) - the one on my V6 quattro (01A) leaks a bit there so its not unknown
2 - the prop shaft towards the rear
          3 - right driveshaft
          4 - left driveshaft
