Finally, if you want to taste how this car can bring you a real fun.you should go for a manual tranny.
I have made up my mind to go to this route.the conversion is big story.how to get the parts from other country and import them to Thailand is also much more bigger story.

I'll be staying with the slushbox for the moment ; but I think you are correct to get the best fun out of the car the only way is with a manual gearbox

Have you done any research on this? I'm wondering if you could you use an 01E with 3.889 final drive to match the rear dif? Or another 5sp (01A) with 3.889 final drive bolt on? (without losing driveability)

Hopefully I will never have to do this but would be good to get some info in case my auto goes kaput one day..

And what sort a performance and mpg gain does the two combined give

About getting from auto to manual, you'll need:
-propshaft(i remebber they are different lenghts,at leest one piece differes)
              -rear differential
-clutch and brake pedals block(i had to get out the dashboard)
              -clutch master cilinder with lines
-flywheel,plate,disc and bearing(dual or single mass, you can fit one kit from v6 but you-ll have to insert the pin for crank sensor or install a crank pulley with sensor)
              -front drive shafts
-the aan crank with automatic has a flange that needs to be removed
-gearbox(offcourse) with the selectors.You-ll have to modify a little the chasis where theselectors get in the car
You-ll have to do some mods for reversing lights(if someone interested i can uppload a pdf with it).
Also some mods to make ecu to think the car is in p(to be abble to start).
I guess with a custom chipset of ecu or a manual aan ecu this is not needed anymore.
I had this donne by buying a 2.8 v6 quattro. But thea gearbox was 01a,and i changet after a while for 01e.I guess the 01a torsen will handdle but a good one.It is hard to find something like that.
If you buy parst without the car is not a good idea because you-ll need all kind of pieces and alwais you-ll have to buy more. So,buy a cheep v6 quattro and a spare 01e gearbox.
Also you could buy a s4/s6 for spares

or let it auto, and get the rights softwares for ecus up to a level.

Sound like you're a man!!! these're the all parts and steps you need to follow.
My friend has done the conversion exactly like your procedures.

This is exactly the question s that I had in mind, I have a S2 aby ecu which has a S2 Central map in there, can I just take out the aan one and fit in the new uprated Aby ecu. If so I should be upto the 290+ bhp mark. Just need to find somewhere that maps the auto box. Does MRC?

The aan ecu for manuals is not the same as the aan ecu for autos. The rev limit for the automatics is 6200 or something like that.

I decided to take prj's 260 bhp approx solution without the autobox computed being chippped. I would like to know what mihnea in MRC could offer.

Auto revlimit is 6600, and there are a few other parameters different - a few enrichments, idle handling etc.
A manual box ecu will work on an auto car (and manual box software), but the higher rev limiter could harm the gearbox and the downshifts will be worse.

                              The rev counter is wrong/overshoots.
It's 6600 fuel cut in ECU.

Inertia can carry it a bit over that. At 6900 you'll already trigger the "engine warranty void" error code on an automatic.

So no, your rev limit was not magically 6900
I kinda know what I am talking about: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aaiCZKp0w6Y&fmt=22

It's already wrong ~80-100 RPM at 2800 RPM revlimiter (shows almost 3000, while ECU does not go above 2880 via hall sender).

So a "rpm monitoring for dummies" question.

The ecu gets rpm information from the hall sender, where does the dash get its signal? And if you wanted to calibrate the dash what would you do?
