james - subaru gearsets are weak as. dont waste your cash.

stock 5 speed box pre 99is 4 bolt iirc and 6 bolt after. the box twists. the gears well stock tdo5 at 1.5 bar will break boxes all over.
6 speed. we did about 500 ish from a 2.35 on the 6 speed. it then starts to whine.

my personal opinion is subaru took a holiday to germany. stopped off at porsche to view a 1970's 911 then called at audi to look at the 3b. a year or so later they popped back to view an aby box.

the person to speak to about subaru boxes is andy forrest. he has a 9 second car. its a 5 speed 6 bolt with a gearset IIRC.

may as well stick with audi bits.

I have the 5 speed original (3B) gearbox in my car for the moment. i have done some tuning Recently. at the moment i have about 400 hp , I might go up to 500 max 600 in the future. Im planning that i should replace clutch and put in a more reliable gearbox.

I plan to just run on the street, no drag or strip , maybe a couple times on
        race track.

which is the strongest and best box for an upgrade in my case ? is it the early s4 5speed box ?

        Regards
        Johan

Was searching the web to see if there was any billet output flanges already available rather than making them and ran into this old thread.
Been working with Audrius and his S2 to determine the weakpoints and strong points of the trusty 01E box. Solving the 1 to 2 issue with hub and gear mods we discovered his aggressive driving didn't do 3 and 4 any favours either.
So after taking the slack out of his shifter linkage with custom bushes and more time than I can recall with Diamond files, lathe and grinding stones to tweak the selector hubs and gears the end result with 750hp low boost was extremely satisfying.

          9600rpm launch
10000rpm redline shift (Yes dry sump)
          1.38sec 60ft
          9.6sec @ 148mph
Using genuine unmodified Vw Audi synchros.

The car sounds like it could do this all day long.

Nice work, well done to all involved.

Thanks for sharing, and also having the Facebook site open.

Good to see you're as busy as ever with cool stuff.
