  • What rear diff & ratio for 01E in a UR?

I have a 01E 6 Speed from a 99 S4 2.7tt. It is going in my 84 UR but I don't know what rear diff I need to match it? Anyone got this info or where to get it?

    TIA

You need a diff from a s2 coupe 3b or aby '90-'96,a diff from a 7a cq will do the job also but the flanges are smaller so s2 ones would need to be found

the UrQ has a 3.89..... the 6 speed has 4.11. you would need to make them match obviously.

B2 UR quattro 1982-87 tranny case 016- locker center differential
      1st-3.600
      2nd-2.125
      3th-1.360
      4th-.967
      5th-.778
      final-3.89:1

      1st-3.600
      2nd-2.125
      3th-1.458
      4th-1.071
      5th-.778
      final-3.89:1

*note* there's two gear set combos for the URq's and we couldn't figure out which ones are for which years

The earlier 83' urq's had a really long jump from 2nd to 3rd that would let the turbo unspool. In December 83' (84 Model Year) they switched over to a newer gear ratio. According to "The Audi Quattro Book.

      81-83 =
      1st-3.600
      2nd-2.125
      3th-1.360
      4th-.967
      5th-.778
      final-3.89:1

"In December 83', (84 Model Year) modified 3rd and 4th gear ratios were used as follows, the object being to improve drivability and mid-range performance.
      84-85 =
      1st-3.600
      2nd-2.125
      3th-1.458
      4th-1.071
      5th-.778
      final-3.89:1

IF you want to use the 01e 6tranny; you need to change the cron, and pinjong it the front, from a URq( 3,889) OR : you need to change the rear end ratio, to the 4,111 rear end( the cron and pinjong(!!!!!) are the same, ether the rear end are from the audi 4000/80 or the rs2 or the v8)
BUT to bee sure; you need to look for the letter between the 2 upper boltholes in the trannybellhousing; fx AHA 12345 or CBL 2222223... audi does have 6tr trannys WITH 3,889 too....the letter are stamped in...
the rear end diffs have the letter by the drainplug or nearby..stamped in fx; AEC

There are ONE opions to go: for the people who want more topspeed; there are some audi 80 2wd with 3,70 diff( front diff) and from vw passat 4motions 98; some of them have the rare 3,70 diffs; also in the rear end( its audi style in this diff)
so for the really high speed; the parts from the vw passat 98 4motion, or from some of the 2wd audi 80.. and the diesel 6tr tranny with rebuild 3,70 and rear end from vw passat 4motion 98 and the v8 thorsen... it will fit too... really high speed

              Many thanks for the replies.

With the power I plan and a good spread of torque across a wide rev range, I am thinking that a 3.89 would be better all round? I had the 01E in my S4 with 500bhp and the gearing seemed low - especially first. So, the question is how to get a 3.89 CWP into the 01E. Will the UR one be a direct swap?

              Cheers.

you may use the URq tranny, they does have the 3,889, ( check out the letters!!!) you need then the 3,889 in the rear
you may find the 6tr trannys in vw passat 4motions from 98 with the 3,889, also the rear end ratio, but you hav to cange the cron and pinjon in the right rear housing( the 80/90/s2 or the 4000 housing) all the part WILL fit in the car..
if you want the 6tr trannys, you also need the gear linkage, an some need 2 pc of the right hand propchaft...

he already has the Ur setup, thats what he wants to put the 6 spd into.

so he has a 3.889 rear end in the car. all he would then need is a 6 spd with 3.889 FD, and if you say the Passat 4Motion has that then that is what trans he needs.

but since he wants to add the trans he already has, he needs to make a rear diff with 4.11 FD fit into his car.

                  end of story.
