Is it safe to drive the car with the diff lock switch removed ? I need to get some new bulbs soldered in & want to drive it while they are being done....

I would have thought yes, i think the circuit is broken with switch in off position or removed as you would have it and the switch makes the circuit so removed should be fine.
Sure other people can give a definite answer thoAnt

Yeah its fine - no problem. The switch just triggers the diff controller to direct vacuum to the lock actuator.Originally posted by Avant S2Is it safe to drive the car with the diff lock switch removed ? I need to get some new bulbs soldered in & want to drive it while they are being done....
Its all moot anyway, as the rear diff lock disengages about 25kph !

Is this how you set it to remain on after 25km/h? From what I know, these rear diffs are strong as all heII and as long as you are going in a straight line, it could be one at 180km/h. true?Originally posted by AnLeWhite/blue wire, *snip* aah, let it snow let is snow ....

Yes, that is the speed signal, diff internals are the same as urquattro etc
manually lockable diff's so there is no worries about the stamina of the diff.
But at tarmac, anything can be broken.Comment

are these white and blue wires on the diff, or the switch or the cluster, or what? Thanks!Originally posted by AnLeYes, that is the speed signal, diff internals are the same as urquattro etc

Snip, Snip!
Remove rear seat bottom cushion (two screws). Locate rear differential control unit. The wire in question is attached on the connector to the control unit.Originally posted by NoNonsenseare these white and blue wires on the diff, or the switch or the cluster, or what? Thanks!
If you really want to be clever you can wire a fog lamp switch into the circut.

OK now please explain WHY you think a locked rear diff will help traction in snow or gravel or whatever ?
This will force the rear wheels to rotate at the same speed, so I don't want to be going round any corners at speed in bad weather without industrial underpants fitted. It would drive seriously weird I reckon.

awesome...i do indeed have the useless ABS switch which I could wire it into. I have the switch just to fill the blank spot. Anybody know how to turn ABS off with the switch of a button on the cars that weren't equiped with that feature? Mine isn't pre-wired for that either.Originally posted by TECH48Remove rear seat bottom cushion (two screws). Locate rear differential control unit. it's something you would want to do really only at low speeds, or while doing donuts in the snow.
If you were in deep sand, you wouldn't want only one of your rear tires to spin, you'd want both to lock and spin. however, in slippery conditions, having the diff locked in the rear and going through a turn will be back.Joe "NoNonsense"

Has anyone locked their rear diff for getting off the line really quick?
Does it make a difference?
If it switched off at 25 mph - is that measured off one wheel or is it the everage of a spinning and non spinning wheel? Just wondering for wheelspinning 0-60 times
I've been doing a few of them recently

Mine came in handy once at a local computer fair where the security were not letting any cars into a half full car park as they wanted it closed so the lazy bas*ards could knock off early
so i went 'the scenic route' through the colledge field
which was a bit boggy but the diff lock definitely made a difference
as i snaked to the back side of the car park :mischeif: . Doorstep parking at its best.

I dont think it has that much to do with traction, but when the rear diff is locked the car oversteers and some find it very enjoyable in the snowOriginally posted by S2central.netOK now please explain WHY you think a locked rear diff will help traction in snow or gravel or whatever ?
