    Which g/box?

    Hi folks,

I am being offered an Audi 100 turbo quattro, 'G' reg (1990) - what gearbox does this car have? It's definitely a five speed, that much I know. I think it has rear diff lock but not sure which centre diff. Is it likely to be the same box as my 1990 CQ? If it is I guess I don't really need it - but the car is being offered as a freebie to a good home.

Gearbox of Audi 100 from 1988 - 1991 all used the same torsen centre differential 5 speed unit as used in type 89 Coupe q and S2 3B, albeit with different ratios. Differential ratio is 4.11:1.

I have a CQ20v and have always been a bit unimpressed by the very low first gear. as soon as the clutch is let out I need to change to second. It may allow the car to climb up the side of a house but I don't like it. Is there another box which is suitable ( apart from 6 speed which my current budget won't allow)?

anyone know the gearbox code for a 1990CQ20V please?

All boxes fitted to Audi 100 from '88 onwards were torsen units, whatever the code! As far as I recall, 3.89:1 final drive was only used on the 200q.

@David: The box from a 90q 20V had higher ratios than the Coupe, I'll check out the ratios and get the code for both 90q 20V and Coupeq 20V.

Thanks Sienna, I have the build sticker and it shows engine / trans code
              7A AEC ASZ

7A is correct for the 20V NA engine but which one is the gearbox? is the ASZ the diff?

@David: AEC is the rear diff on the following models:

                01/87 - 12/87 = Audi Coupe, type 85 / 89
                04/85 - 03/87 = Audi 4000, USA type 85
                08/89 - 04/90 = Audi 80, type 89

ASZ is the 5 speed torsen gearbox for the following model only:

                11/88 - 08/90 = Audi Coupe type 89.

As the ASZ box is not listed for the Audi 90 20V q, as one would expect it to, it supports what I've suspected for a while that the 90 q, both in 7A and KV form, have different ratios - differential ratio is as Coupe q, i.e 4.11:1 but the rest of the gears are higher. 90 q's tend to cruise better than equivalent - engined Coupes.

Coupes ARE very low geared, especially the almost useless 1st! 7A Coupe will pull away cleanly in 2nd, while 7A 90 won't. It makes sense, as the 7A 90 q is lighter than the 7A Coupe q, the different ratios put their accelleration on a par.

The 100 has a 016 series torsen gearbox that is bigger than ours.
t89 cars had 01A series torsen 5 speed boxes.

Both 3.89 and 4.11 finals were used BUT all 5 cyl t89s have the 4.11.

I've been planning a 3.89 final to my 5 speed s2 box. That should make it better to suit my needs (longer 1 and 2 and lower highway revs)
This would be possible using the CQ v6 finals.

If the 100 has one of these elusive 016 boxes in it, I will definitely have it! Anyone else got any info about this? Remember, I am talking about a circa 1990 100 quattro turbo, but frankly I don't need another car lying around at home if it's got the same box as my 1990 2.3 10v cq!

The 016 box was only used in the pre - torsen Audi 100 q, up to approx. '88 (trigger door handle models). The 200q maintained the 016 type box, though it gained the torsen centre diff from 1988 onwards, as did all Ur q's. So all torsen equipped boxes used in Audi 100 q's were coded 01A as all type 89 cars.

The only non torsen box used by Audi in the 1988 model year was that fitted to the type 85 Coupe q.

Sorry but you are wrong. They were 016s with torsen or without.

Edit: Sorry but I was also partly wrong. Both 01A and 016 were used in 100q. For example gearboxes AOB AOC AUN AUP were 016 torsens in 100q.

@Porkkis: I agree 016 came in torsen and non - torsen. But 1988 onwards saw changes. These were:

                            1988 - 1991: Audi 100 q - 01A torsen
                            1988 - 1990: Audi 200 q - 016 torsen
                            1988 - 1991: Audi quattro - 016 torsen
                            1986 - 1996: Audi 80 / 90 (type 89 / B4) 01A torsen

                            Early cars were as follows:

                            1980 - 1988: Audi quattro - 016 non - torsen
                            1983 - 1986: Audi 80 q - non - torsen
                            1984 - 1985: Audi 90 q - non - torsen
                            1984 - 1988: Audi Coupe q - non - torsen

The point I am trying to make is the 016 used in the Audi 100 q BEFORE 1988 WERE non - torsen units, but 1988 onwards saw the move to the 01A torsen unit, which first saw service in the type 89 Audi 80 q from 1986 onwards and type 89 Audi 90 q from 1987 onwards.

The 200 q never used the 01A torsen box - As early as 1988, the quite a few 01A torsen boxes suffered failure, both in the bearings and the torsen unit itself, and lots were replaced by Audi UK under warranty. The 016 box was relatively strong and didn't seem to have any reliability problems. The 016 box gained torsen in the 1988 model year 200 q and Ur q. One of the advantages of the 01A unit was weight - the previous 016 units were very heavy, as anyone on here who has had to replace a clutch will testify! Another advantage of the 01A was the gearchange - light compared to the 016. The 6 ratio 01E is 016 - based, in terms of the casing and most internals.

                            So I can say:
There was no non - torsen 016 used in the type 44 q AFTER 1988.
                            100 q never had a torsen 016
                            200 q never had a torsen 01A
200 q used a non - torsen 016 till 1988 but not after, when torsen 016's were used
Audi quattro had a non - torsen 016 till 1988
Audi quattro had a torsen 016 from 1988 till 1991
Audi Coupe q type 85 had non - torsen all through production - 1984 till 1988
Audi Coupe q type 85 is the only q never to gain the torsen diff though built till 1988

I have checked and found the codes you listed above as torsen units in Audi 100 q, but have never seen a UK model with that box. It is also listed in the 200 q in the same year. Can only assume it is a non - Uk model as well, as all 200 q's over here had 3.89:1 ratio, same as Ur q. AOB, AOC, AUN and AUP are all 4.11:1 ratios boxes.

Well that is one comprehensive explanation.

I would like to point out that I am no UK model myself neighter! I thought this was an international forum.
