    s4 gearbox options

This has probably been answered before but what options do I have to replace the 6 speed manual box on my URS4.
    I understand that the B5 S4 and A6 2.7T boxes will fit.
What other options are there without making any modifications please?
    Thanks

If you need to change your 6spd box, a DSY or EDU from a B5 S4 or an A6 2.7tt will work with very minor issues (dowels). You will also lose the ProConTen feature that might save your life. A CRB from an RS2 is technically a stronger box (when new) and still has the ProConTen bracket.

I am only asking because the 1 st gear is weak and noisy and therefore looking for an alternative/ affordable solution.
Or do I source a s4/s6 used box and take the chance?
Or do I get my box rebuilt?
        Decisions, decisions

Not difficult. He needs an 01E with a 4.11 to 1 final drive ratio. The RS2 CRB and the B5 S4 and A6 2.7tt transmissions work.

Or a late S2 CGR same as CRB for half the cost.....

The problem with rebuilding your box is if 1st gear is fubard then you will need a new input shaft as its part of the shaft, lots of money.

Get a wide first gear box to rebuild, if you find one take the indent off of the side and you can use a torch and just about see 1st gear to see what condition it is in prior to purchase, syncroes and bearings are relatively easy to do but if 1st is ****eeed your better off getting another box...

              Hope it helps....

the rebuild cost on an 01E is stupid.
The bearings alone come to well over £1k. As said first gear is part of the input shaft so thats circa £800, throw in a few syncros and and you've spent £2k already. Unfortunately decent used boxes are becoming harder to find now

In truth not that much goes wrong with them, noisy first gears can last forever..

Bearings rarely go and gears rarely break, synchros are the week point and normally only 2nd as its used so much.

Some good tests to see what sort of condition your box is in is firstly drop the oil out and have a look at what colour it is, metallic is not good.

Following that you can remove the rear nose that holds the rear drive flange and slide the torsion out.

Once out there are three magnets all of which will give you a good idea of the wear that has taken place. Smooth past like material is just synchroniser material from use.. chunks of metal is not so good..

There not that hard to rebuild and nothing needs shimming unless you change gears or bearings..

                  Hope it helps..

                    Many thanks for the replies.
                    can I just confirm one thing....If I sourced a B5 S4 or a A6 2.7tt box...can it go straight in with no mods?
Apart from losing the Pro Con System?
                    Cheers

I think you have to eliminate one of the dowel (alignment) pins and one bolt length changes but that is about it.
