Sounds just like my Avant did, clutch release bearing was on it's way out, don't think it was that loud it wasn't quite that loud - although that is difficult to guauge on a video. Worried me when I first heard it but didn't give me any issues over 10k miles, or get worse. Figured i'd change it when it got worse.AUDI - saving Dad's from minivans since 1994

Andy,
Sounds like a chattering clutch release bearing, i had one once after changing the engine.
My problem was due (stupidly i believe) to washing the engine bay and internals of the bell housing with TFR which must have got into the release bearing.
When i removed it the landing face of the bearing had 3mm of side play which was chattering from left to right when no load was being applied. It went quiet once the clutch was pressed as the bearing was under load hence no chattering.
Hope it helps...

If it's a release bearing, it's pretty far gone.
Is there any vibration coming back up to the pedal?
You can generally expect 10k to 20k miles - sometimes more - from a release bearing after it first becomes noisy. But if you get pedal vibration (or a ball bearing on the drive) it's imminent.Comment

I thought it was the release bearing too. I went to Tonk's yesterday to fit a new one, and after listening to the car up on the ramp we decided that the noise was definatley coming from the gearbox rather than the belhousing area.
The bearing that's in there has only done 1250miles but the noise has been there since day one, so I thought I had knocked the bearing off the clutch arm when re-fitting the engine.sigpic

is it a dm flywheel or a sm?The noise could be sm fly.But sometimes i get the same noise with a sm fly.Your noise seems to be more than mine but also the camera recordings amplifies noises. Is the sound as noisy as in the recording?
This noise is comming only at iddle.I guess some pinions play in the box.The main shaft is rotating with the engine rpm but the pinions from the other shaft not being tight to the main shaft pinions are doing the clik-clak noise.(i never opened this box i am only imagining things)
This is very strange.I changed oil but the problem not disaapeard. After a while was gone, and again and again.Specialy on hot.Comment

You fitted a 6 speed to your 3b with single mass?
Your slave cyl rod prob needs lengthening.Volcano ABY coupe

I've had exactly the same problem since fitting a SM fly. I changed the bearing twice with no joy. I figured the release bearing isnt held by the slave against the finger springs anymore because you alter the clearance when you swap clutch, fly, spacer.
A hydraulic slave will naturally take up the gap unless the pushrod won't reach at full extension...Volcano ABY coupe

I've had this set up ( 6speed box + 3B flywheel ) for a while and not had this problem. It only arose when I fitted the stroker engine for the second time.sigpic

Knocked the composite face off the bearing?
Convinced it's that bearing. As you prob know yourself they can make some hellish noises.
The one on the van has sounded fooked for about 60,000 milesVolcano ABY coupe
