Does anybody know the dimensions for the ball and cup, such as the ball size. Nylon cup insert OD, stud size OD attached to the ball? We have a supplyer of spherical bearings we use where i work and have found some standard catalogue parts that look like they will work with very little modification!!

I made one using a sperical bearing. Although i did fit it on and it did work, it was very tight as there is no play in spherical bearing like there is on a standard ball and socket linkage. So, like when you have it in neutral and normally it will wiggle side to side nicely, with the spherical bearing it was more rigid. I did end up using a standard one in the end but if i had spent more time setting it up i am sure it would work. I may try it again at some point. I have some pictures on my camera which i will load up tomorrow.Comment

Mine will spring to neutral as standard, but the spring needs to be stiffer. When I next have my gearbox off I'm planning to modify my detent springs as JHM / SpeedingG60 have done to overcome the inherant stiffness of the uniballI made one using a sperical bearing. This was how i did mine.
First unscrewed the ball of the end of the linkage arm.

Found a spherical bearing that just fitted nicely into the cup of the main arm

Then had the ball off the linkage arm machined down so it went into the spherical bearing but still leaving the allen head on the end to screwit to the linkage arm. Also had the end of the ball machined down so it would just sit on the lip of the bearing but still rotate within the casing of the bearing.

Then cut a hole in the bottom of the cup on the main arm so i could get access to screw the new machined ball onto the arm.

Then put it together.

Looks good mate!!
Did you bond the new bearing into the cup?
What stops the small linkage arm pushing through the bearing and further into the cup?
Where did you get the bearing from and do you have any info on the size of it?
Cheers Chris,

The bearing was just a nice fit that it pushed into the cup. I then just had a couple of tack welds put at the top to stop it coming out.
Nothing stops the arm pushing further into the bearing as i realised that this did not really matter that it could push in slightly. Once bolted to the gearbox it cannot push in that much anyway. Stopping it pulling out is the main one.
The bearing i got from city seals and bearings. I need to find the receipt so i can get the code for it. I seem to remember it was about £40.Comment
