  • Non S2 clutch and flywheel question.

Hi all, the dual mass flywheel is a bit ******ed on my B5 Quattro TDI and needs changing. Its got the AFN engine. Basically when setting off from low revs or reversing gives a nasty judder and am fearful for the life of my propshaft, diffs and etc. from all the extra vibration. I'd also like to remap the engine later this year so it'll need sorting out.

I was tempted to convert to a Valeo SMF kit which can be bought off of eurocarparts but was advised by my local VAG specialist not to do this for fear of destroying the crank.

    http://www.eurocarparts.com/ecp/c/Au...baafbe33e&SCON

I believed it to be cheaper to keep a DMF set up but looking on eurocarparts just now the valeo kit comes in at £438 compared to £346 + £146 for LUK DMF and clutch seperately.

Also whats a realistic price to pay for a garage to do this work? the cheapest quote i've had around my area so far is £914 all in from a VW Audi specialist garage, and £667 from a fellow over in London who is more accustomed to working on French Cars but is willing to give it a shot. I'm yet to try RCMR here on the forum and am waiting for a quote from a garage in Christchurch, but anyone know of anywhere or anyone decent that could do the job cheaper? I'm willing to travel a reasonable distance to get the work done.

My 2 cents worth... I would recommend if there is an option to convert to single mass then do it

Dual mass flywheels in my opinion have far more down sides than advantages.

Especially if you are going for more power too, a dmf will not last very long.

As far as labour rates are concerned it depends on where you live in the country, I would suggest a fair labour charge would be approx £250 + parts give or take a few quid.

i ordered a singelmass flywheel; straight flat in steel, and 6puckers sinter, whith fedrers in the lamell, and pressureplate steg 3+kit .. to a 1,8liter 20v t engine...from 034... it will fit this engine too, and no prob for a girl to manage in the town/ street

I would say so.... Lol I would also say 90% of people when tuning their engines bin the DMF no matter what make or model of car it is. In a word they are ****!!!!!

Ok cool, the garage that gave me the advice also gave me the most expensive quote, about £990 all in. If I can get it for less than £800 i'll consider doing it. Might order the valeo kit this month myself and get the labour done another month to avoid paying megabucks out all at once.

What kinda difference can the SMF make to everyday driving? I heard they make a lot of chatter when in neutral and can be a bit tricky to get used to.

            Ta for the replies

You won't notice any difference I would say it should rev a little quicker as it's lighter.

Don't forget most cars used to be fitted with solid flywheels and were only introduced around 1993 ish

And you have to ask why would a company produce a single mass flywheel conversion if it was not an improvement?

Agree with you Brian. A DMF is generally heavier than a solid. The damper was removed from the clutch plate and installed in the flywheel. Why? Cheaper to produce clutches without the damping gubbins? I don't know. But without the extra "drag" an engine will rev quicker however, it may also be a tad lumpier on idle due to less inertia.

yes. i also use a single mass flywheel conversion on an aby. I used an uprated 3b clutch by clutchnet and even that is easy for a girl to use.

Why is everyone calling me a girl?!?!?!

OK thanks for the advice, i'll probably go with the Valeo clutch kit and find a friendly mechanic with a lift.

Just be careful with a full kit, especially if you want to chip/tune the car. I bought a "uprated kit" from ebay, utter rubbish, worse than the standard DMF with 60k on it. I had to return it and just bought all genuine parts. Mine is a FWD Seat Ibiza tdi - engine code ASV. I bought a G60 flywheel from Seat, and just payed the sucharge (£30). Then bought a complete VR6 clutch kit, genuine sachs unit, six new shorter bolts for the flywheel. All in about £300, Seat were quoting this for the clutch kit alone, just do a search online for it. Since the SMF conversion it has been fine, the VR6 is 228mm so will take more power, plus the pedal is lighter.

That sounds good Ivan, the Valeo set I was looking at is around £440, so fi I could get it for £300 it'd be great but I remember reading somewhere it was rated to about 200lb/ft of torque, but I guess the G60 VR6 combo would be rated much higher.

Would this definitely fit on my car though? B5 platform with Quattro and 1.9 TDI AFN engine?

                            Looking on Ebay now

This was the kit I bought from ebay http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/PERFORMANCE-CL...item56349a4116 *IT WAS RUBBISH*!!!
But it does gives a list of car fitments, it doesn't list if for a A4 AFN but does list it for AFN powered cars, but they would be 2WD, you could take a look on VAGCAT to get audi part number then cross reference to see what you need. this is basically what I built up. http://www.awesome-gti.co.uk/product.php?xProd=10682

You could give awesome a ring and see what they reckon then just build it up a bit cheaper yourself.
