  • Anyone seen G38 on an old 016 gearbox ?

This is a question about electrics as much as gearbox... I am trying to find info on the inductive speed sensor (G38) that was used on B2 models equipped with cruise control. Reason being the older KV quattros had a mechanical cable drive for the speedo... and the addition of G38 on the gearbox gave them the 'VSS' signal into the cruise control module.

Seemingly G38 reappears on recent VAG transmissions but I am curious to know if I can retrofit a G38 into an 01E gearbox for a good VSS source. The car in question is a KV quattro donor that now has AAN motor and 01E gearbox... the owner already modified it to run the KV speedo clocks on a cable... just trying to find the most elegant way to add VSS.

I reckon the URs with digidash did it differently as they used the hall effect sensor (G22/G68) much like the S2/RS2 and presumably sourced a VSS from that.

Guess I need to dig out the old books and family album for a lengthy search, but hopefully someone has BTDT that will save some time.

Found the UR diagrams for cruise and they definitely use hall sensor (G22/G68)..... This G38 oddball does not apply to them.

And Audi 100/200 circa 1988 also uses setup with G22 in the gearbox and VSS coming from speedo (as per S2).

Quite the anomolie is cruise on a KV quattro... presumably only US or EU models got that extra... rare as hens teeth probably nowadays

So the family album is telling me that MY86 KV engined cruise control used inductive sensor 443 907 345B but the digram (ill 104-00) is rubbish....
Ahhhhhhh hold on - it looks like this sensor is clipped over the speedo cable at rear of dashboard.... RESULT !

Good. I was going to point you at Bosch 7 607 611 093 which seems to work the same way.

(And is probably the same product with a 35% cheaper Bosch number.)

Do you have any idea what was modified?

A cable driven speedo sender as per 016 was fitted instead of hall effect device that the later boxes got.

The rhd KV quattro had mechanical speedo though I think there was an electronic version as an option in some territories.
