    CV grease?

I have a clicking outer CV joint on lock. Annoyingly I had the boot changed and the 'thin' end of the boot has just been cable tied, as a result most of the grease has come out over time. Ultimately I'll replace the whole boot and grease, and get the CV joint checked for damage, but in the mean time I was going to try and squeeze some grease in there and clamp it properly.

I was wondering if a straight Halfords Moly grease will do the trick or do CVs need something more exotic? I know in the kits there is a tube of grease.

Any grease would be better than nothing but CV joints need Lithium grease which is Grey in colour. If it's clicking the odds are it's been damged I'm a afraid, that said I would try repacking it before consigning it to the bin.

if it knocks its ****ed - the knocking is play in the balls & races.
New joint time in my experience.. if its only minor repacking it might eek it out for a bit but it's on borrowed time.

Essential to use the right grease mate - it is special high temp stuff as Kit said. GSF sell big tins of it for about £5

AFAIK the joints supplied by GKN need the green Molybdenum Disulfide grease...

Agree with above, if it makes any noise at all it has worn and needs replaced. I have all ways used Moly based grease when rebuilding joints.

Unusual for a CV joint to fail on a Quattro, not something i have ever seen. In my Honda days you had to change them with every oil change

Cheers. I'll not make Halfords tonight - thanks to good old British public transport - pick some up tomorrow. They sell a lithium moly grease. In the mean time is the ECP / GSF part OEM equivalent? I dread to think what the stealer price is...

I think the cause of the failure is a combination of the cable tie used by Mr Muppet Mechanic, allowing the grease to escape, then sitting for 3 months in the garage where any moisture that got in would have been able to cause issues. For the longest time I was using it daily so probably kept it free from corrosion.

If the grease can get out, dirt and grit can get in. So then you have an overheating, poorly lubricated joint with grit & dirt in it - they don't last long in that state.

Get the OEM GKN / Lobro ones, dealer price is about £100 + VAT IIRC, I think QC supplies them too.

What's the consensus on CV joint grease? Moly disulphide or lithium Moly??

I need to grease up the front inner CV joints and the front propshaft joint before dropping the engine/gearbox back in today.

                    Cheers

As above, just get one of the big tubs from gsf etc, normally white tub with gray lid.

normal s2 stuff is brilliant, later vw/audi stuff can go quite easily unfortunately. I've seen stock and an extremely big amount of lowered vw stuff break down very quickly. They just don't make them like they used to
