  • Help please! 2.7tt (A6) tiptronic, clutch off and not locking in gear

    Hi all,

First off, apologies if this is treading on toes, I have tried another forum or two with very little in the way of help or response, and ultimately, the people on here seem to know the difference between that thing half way down their arm, and the thing they sit on... Anyhow.

I have an A6 2.7tt, still on original ATF fluid, it seems the clutch isn't locking and is in a constant state of slip, i am conscious that either the torque converter is kaput, however, I 'may' be able to breathe a second wind into it by changing the ATF fluid, and perhaps, adding something like Forte ATF treatment (have used their power steering treatment in the past on another car, and it worked well - its still going and doesn't groan anymore, if a little heavy) anyway.

I'm based down in Portsmouth.... Moved from Sheffield where I had a double garage, lots of room to work and tools. Now I'm here I don't have access to a garage/driveway/pit, etc, can either anyone suggest anyone who knows what their doing to take a look at changing the ATF fluid and of course, won't take the p*ss with pricing, or, is anyone local to me willing to offer a hand (with a garage/pit/lift/somewhere to work) -happy to pay for your time.

Any help or suggestions would be most appreciated.

    Cheers,
    Jonathan

Your more than welcome to come and use my lift, little point you paying me to do it if you can do it yourself but, as i say, more than welcome to use my lift.

I'm not exactly on your doorstep, Basingstoke, say 35 - 40 mins.. Not sure how bad your slipping is...

      Thanks Darren, most appreciated.

I have *some* tools with me. As i understand it, i need: 17mm allen socket, and a T27 torx bit. I have a handful of tools with me (we now live in a small terraced house) ... so *may* need to borrow, perhaps, an extension/breaker bar if it's tight, if you have a fluid pump it'd save me purchasing one?

it's not slipping bad at all, the car actually belongs to a good friend and i'm using it for the time being (was sat on his drive for 3 months, was fine before that)

may also take the opportunity to change the oil temp sensor as that's creamed too.

i assume a weekend would be alright? i'll get my mate to come down and then he can help.

do you have facilities for disposing of oil? no probs if not, will get some cannisters to take it to recycling if you don't.

let me discuss with the owner before i agree to sort it on a particular day ...

basingstoke would be fine, and your offer is very very much appreciated! thanks!

No problem on the tools front, though I dont have a fluid pump nor anywhere to dispose of the oil, i too just take it to the local recycling centre.

Let me know what day suits and i will ensure i am around.

        Darren.

          Hi.

It'll be early Feb I'd have thought, I suspect, if it's ok with you, I bring the car over on a Friday night, then come up Saturday to work on it, so the g/b temp is nice and low.

Will be in touch closer to the time to arrange when.

          Cheers,
          Jt

Have you pulled codes off the ecu to see if it is showing any faults with gearbox?

Probably blown seals inside the box.
ATF change won't help, don't waste your time.

                        and money...
But hey, if you believe in snake oil over science...

Get it rebuilt. Don't get another such trans from the junkyard, because it is likely to develop exactly the same problem. Most of them, if not all do eventually.

If you read through the thread, it actually did not solve the problem.
Also, the RS6 has a different gearbox. The blown seals are a known problem on the 5HP19 fitted to the 2.7TT.

The car is only worth, maybe £1500 or so. Spending £800+ on a rebuilt 'box doesn't (imo) make sense ...

I don't have the knowledge to pull out a gearbox, nor do i have the room to do it myself (if i had a lift at home, i would be happy to crack on with it, but i don't, so would have to pay someone to do that)

You have a 2.7TT with auto box. The reason it's not worth anything is because maintenance costs are insane. These cars are very cheap to buy, but very expensive to keep on the road.

I think a 2.7TT with anything less than 400 horsepower is completely useless as well, as you are better off buying a V8 and saving on the crazy maintenance costs and the labor costs (I have a RS4, so I know).

But yeah, you can always break it. If the engine is still good, it might fetch some money.
