    Noise from rear wheel

    Hi,

On my way home from work tonight my avant (7a engined b4 quattro) started making an awful noise from the rear passengers side wheel.

It sounds like the wheel is square. Thud, thud, thud. It speeds up with the speed of the car. It does it with handbrake or footbrake on. It kind of goes away if I back off the throttle completely.

I checked the tyre, wheel bolts, large centre bolt and checked the wheel bearing by trying to move the wheel at 12 and 6, all seemed fine. It was cold, wet and dark so I left it at that.

Would a rear wheel bearing just drone like the front's do when worn ?

Has anyone had a rear driveshaft\cv joint fail on a quattro and if so what were the symptoms\noises ?

    Thanks

    Michael

I know you have had quick look at the tyre/wheel but change it, just to rule it out completely - I had a tyre that looked in good shape but was deforming under the weight of the car ??

I got away from work early today so I managed to get the car looked over.

I took it for a wee drive before hand just to confirm what side the noise was coming from before I started taking anything to bits. When on the drive I passed a big wall on the passengers side. The noise bouncing back was cv noise, not like the thump, thump you hear from inside the car.

I stripped it down to get the drive shaft out. Outer cv seems good with nice fresh grease and nice range of movement. Didn't make any noises when spun with car jacked up. Inner cv was very notchy with grease that looked and felt like tar. It does live right above the exhaust and I didn't see a heat shield.

I checked the wheel bearing while I was at it and it spun very freely for a good second or two. It should have a bit more resistance I think ?

I've ordered a whole driveshaft as the local motor factors said a cv wasn't available seperately.

If this doesn't cure the noise then the wheel bearing will be changed.

I don't really have any input I am afraid.

How come you got off work early though?

Well today I tried to get a cv joint. No cv's available just the whole driveshaft. When the driveshaft arrived it was different at the spline going into the hub.

Since I think it's the inner cv at fault I got them to order in some inner cv's to size up. All listed for audi 80 avant quattro but each one was different in one way or another from the original. I had the same hassles trying to get front ones a few years ago.

I've ended up buying a tub of cv grease, I'll clean up and regrease the existing cv's and see if this works. If not I've heard you can have cv's refurbished so that might be the only option.

If you take the cv apart I would put all the balls back where they came from as everything is probably worn to fit now.
