Clutch flexihose problem - Check yours!

I have finally tracked down the problem with my intermittent clutch pedal.

The end of the gear selector shaft has been rubbing on the hardline section of the clutch flexi hose, and has now worn through it!

I would advise all members to take a quick look under the bonnet and check that their gear selector shaft cannot rub against the hardline!

As you can see from the pictures this is not good news. (Excuse the pants pictures the garage camera is rubbish! )

Can anyone look at KATE and give me the part number please. (I am sure it will be NLA but it is worth a shout....)

    Thanks,

    Steve

Looking on ETKA it lists 8a2 721 477 as RHD version but also lists 8a2 721 477a for RHD ABY. It's £80 odd might be cheaper to have a specialist firm make one.

Good call Steve, I'm glad you've finally found the problem. Looks like the Audi part is expensive although someone on here may have a secondhand one. Otherwise a flexi hose of the same length with a female fitting at both ends and a custom bent rigid pipe look like the way to go. I could make the custom rigid pipe up for you if you tell me the length.

If you used a Goodridge type flexi which is thinner could you go all the way to the slave cylinder with flexi or will it foul on something?

Aaron did a flexi DIY how to

ok. second DIY for me here.... write up after testing :) and the pix will be up, the photobucket ran out of bandwidth, they will return. i did a 5 speed 01E swap into the Coupe Quattro. and i do not like the stock rubber/hardline clutch hydraulic line. i made one for the rabbit when i did...

Probably worth getting a qoute from a hose specialist to make one up as well.

DIY hardlines are easy with a flaring tool, just need to sort a flexi.

          Thanks guys.

You definitely need the hard line part. The exit from the slave cylinder / gearbox is right behind the gear linkage pivot point and there is no way you could risk flexi all the way. This means the flexi needs to be joined to the hard line the same as the OEM. (The hard line is permanently joined to the flexi with no break point).

I will see if there is a local plave that can make one up and go from there, otherwise it is expensive OEM...

          Cheers,

Flexi ose should be available from a local motor factors, and any decent garage should have tools to make you a hardline to length. 20 quid tops.

you will struggle to remake the hardline without specialist tools, the bend radius you need to create are tighter than normal brake pipe bending tools. BTDT.
I ended up modifying my 5spd one to fit.

Sounds like I am going to have to go for a two piece solution. Hard line that can be separtated from the flexi part...

I will see if I can find a local company to make something...

                  Cheers,

Maybe you can remove the connectors from the flexi hose by cutting the outer cramped on metal piece (until you get to the rubber hose again, so not all the way through).
You could then re-use the connectors by using hose clamps and getting some hydraulic hose, you would only need the hardline to be manufactured (which shouldn't be too expensive)...

Maybe a banjo and a hose will work?

I tried a 90,45 and a straight off the slave and found that this is the best fit by far!
