  • RS2 vibration upon deceleration

    Hi all.

I have recently acquired a mint condition '95 RS2 with low mileage and FSH.
After running VAGcom we were pleased to find minimal fault codes.

So a few nights ago my mate began work on the engine, and found all was happy there too, bar a bit of cambelt and pulley adjustment.

The only real issue we need to resolve is a distinct noise and vibration coming through the floor whenever in gear, but moreso when decelerating.

It has the same characteristics of a CV joint that makes contact with the body at some point- but we have confirmed this isnt it.

    What could it possibly be?

    thanks in advance

Is there an aftermarket exhuast or any mods to the RS?

I would look at the snub mount or engine mounts as well. I have a similar vibration on hard, fast left handers because my engine side mount is worn. The vibration is caused by the downpipe rubbing against the subframe.

I've also had a similar vibration with a snub mount bracket that was too tight against the rubber mount, great at restricting movement but it caused vibration through the cabin.

        hi greg.

The car is absolutely stock standard.
        CATS still there too.

it can best be described as a vibration in the front of the propshaft

Hi mate. How is the bambino?

I would check rear gearbox mountings, which would contribute to excessive rock of the engine when running against compression. Next check the centre bearing of the propshaft. Not a bad idea to service the propshaft and make sure the two CV's and the universal joint are in good condition.

Check the center prop mounting on the car too, there is a guide on how to replace but it may be that this is a bit knackered and as Ross says also check the snub mount too

My vote goes to the Centre Prop Bearing.
Did it on both my S2s and my RS2.

I bought the one from Javad over at 034. Wasnt a straight fit as I think those are for S4s but made a plan with a spacer and it worked.

So it turned out to be the top mounts..

Greeny has diagnosed the problem to be the top shock mount.. so while i still am waiting for parts from 034, i'm ever so glad it wasn't anything mechanical!

                      hows your new S2?

                        Glad you found the problem

The S2 is immaculate, needs alot of work to bring it to S2R spec but all in good time
Under strict instructions from the better half not to race it though as its too beautiful.

I am glad she takes such an interest - so yes, please don't race it!
Great stuff.. Oh and S2R is from another planet.. Don't use her as a benchmark :-)

I'm sure he briefed you on the boost cut out issues he's found on the RS2.. What are your thoughts?
