All sorted! The local garage were great and pressed the new bearing in for a tenner. Got it all back together in an hour and a half last night. Test drive was faultless and the car is quiet and smooth again. What a relief. All, just in time for ADI.
Thanks for all the help and advice guys.
Cheers,
Steve

Sorry to drag up an old issue, was the wheel bearing the cause of the noise ?
Found this thread while searching for something else related to Transmission issues.
Thanks.
Sorry, just seen this! YES the wheel bearing was very noisy, replacing it cured all. (Doing the otherside now hence, just seen your post!)

Indeed, that's not a good idea with a quattro and I would't do with a 2WD either for safety's sake. A rough bearing can be SAFELY diagnosed by spinning the wheels by hand and comparing the feel, that's if there's no obvious audible give away's.
