  • URS4 Box as a FWD

Busy with putting a AAN motor and gearbox into a FWD 4 door 1991 90.

Will eventually fit a S2 rear subframe and make it Quattro. In the interim will need to run the gearbox with the center diff locked.

This will require permanent power onto the diff locker (1st problem). Although the engine will be detuned so that it is drivable as a FWD (135- 140KW), will running with the diff lock permanently engaged cause any excessive wear?

Maybe I can reduce the voltage to 8v , so the solenoid does not burn out. Or take the unit apart and make a plan so it stays engaged without any power. Do not think there should be a problem running the diff permanently locked, but thought I should check other opinions on the subject.

you need to weld the centre diff, diff lock button is for rear diff only

Nope . No mounting points for subframe. Will make some and with roll cage, fuel cell etc we should be fine. But lots of work in a few years time.

i always thaught FWD cars had 90% of the rear subframe pickups without the captive nuts in place?

Thanks. Where did I get that misconception from other than my Type 85. Getting old!!

            Back to drawing board.

Regarding the Quattro conversion (see http://www.s2forum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=59151- where I asked the question) looks like mounting provisions made on the B4 and up but not on the B3 and earlier.
