  • Gearbox noise

I've broken many a gearbox in my time, this one came broke it seems (Didn't run) Typically after doing a bunch of suspension work and driving it, it makes this noise.

If you've ever had something metal hit a pulley while its going round, sounds just like that, except a touch lighter and put inside a box. Except it only does it in 2nd-5th, nothing in first. Dip the clutch, it goes away, rev it, not there. Seems to be in time only with the box speed.

Drives ok enough, just that noise is a strange one. A mate has suggested layshaft bearings. Car is a fwd v6 Coupe.

Could it be release bearing related?

Do you have a single mass flywheel ?

No idea on the flywheel, did they have one as stock? Its a 2.8. Car rags about fine, after a good thrashing there was a judder on the clutch come to think of it.

Would expect a whine of any sort if it was bearings. PO seemed pretty honest, so I'd assume the issue wasn't there before being laid up for a few years.
