  • Spongey Gear Change?

I've had my S2 now for a couple of months, I've been used to the very solid gear change though a while after getting new gear oil in, the gear change seems to have softened and at times seems a bit spongey if I could call it that. Is this normal?

Do you mean its not as precise when you change gear?

It's still precise but sometimes the gear change just feels like the lever is a little loose. Apart from that everything is fairly smooth and no noises at all.

Maybe removing the gaiter will reveal something a little loose?

Yes it is the one from oubaS2, overall a very clean example. Where you a former owner?

The gear shift has come a bit loose. No play in the lever really.

yes had it for a few years,

it used to do this often, sometimes sloppy, sometimes positive
,it could be the engine and box mounts that are worn and pulling at the gearchange selector rod,
                or
                maybe selector barrel inside gearbox

Cheers cooper, it only started doing it for the first time about a week ago on a night out, it had normally been up to then very solid. Overall nothing serious I suppose but will have to look at it.

Thanks once again, I have a small diary given to me by Mr OubaS2, it belonged to a Mr Paul Shaw, is that anyone on here? He recorded every time he bought a vehicle, took petrol, changed oil, fluids etc

Book ranged from a 1987 golf, to a 1988 audi 80 quattro, audi 90 20v quattro and an s2 all the way to 2007.

Surprised he didn't put that book up and frame it. The book is even older than me funnily enough
