Clutch Replacement + Slave Cylinder Advice

My clutch has gone today and will get it replaced soon, car is currently at the garage awaiting it's operation. Now I don't have a slave cylinder available at the moment as I've seen it's best to change it while the box is out.

How difficult is it to access the slave cylinder should I wish to change it afterwards (with the box on)

Cheers for any help at all, would appreciate it

A royal pain in the Harris!
Especially if the roll pin is seized in etc.

A +1 to doing it while the box is out on the floor.

Even with the car up in the air is it still really that difficult? Box in the way?

Will hopefully get it sorted some time this week..I've got a clutch kit ready, will re-face the flywheel, when checked no signs of leaks anywhere..so should be fine for now.

I didn't mind doing it on a aby/rs2. Ross's one was easy enough. Its just putting the linkage in gear so you can get at the bits to undo that was annoying. Its a lot easier than on a 3b.

You mean easier on a 3b? As I've read while searching

Well for now no leaks were found, though the clutch is gone, pedal is fine, so I can leave those on for now. Mechanic managed to get the car limping on it's way back to the garage by rev-matching and no gear crunching. Top bloke

no its easier on a aby/rs2 as you can go in from above as the battery tray is not in the way

So the consensus is that it's best to go in from the engine bay rather than niggling it past the gearbox?

                  Thats how I did ross's.

10mm deep socket on a ratchet to undo the bolt.
10 or 11mm spanner on the fluid pipe

then just "pop" it out and swap for the other one, I think I remember asking ross to sit in the car and hold the linkage in a certain gear to get a bit more space but it didn't take too long to do, just make sure you have a bit of tissue/cloth to keep the tools clean so they don't slip.

Will keep that in mind, thanks for all the help

Will get the car up the ramp early morning and if there's not too much going on with other cars, they could get started with getting the box out

Just bear in mind that once the retainer is out it can still be hard to get the slave out due to aluminium oxide corrosion.
I have been unfortunate enough to actually snap a slave cylinder in half as it was seized into the bell housing that badly

Everything gone smoothly, within 3 hours my two mechanics had the box out, replaced the clutch and back on in a few minutes

Next step tomorrow put the rest of it back together, just downpipe, driveshafts (changing a cv boot as one has snapped (got the kit) ) and fit the new compressor.

Also, still had the original clutch with the audi stamp on it! 17 years, not too bad
