True but weight over the rear axle will just be like having weight over the front. Your just end up tail happy.

You really should aim for everything between the axles which with a quattro is impossible.

Using ally hard pipes the extra weight of relocating it anywhere on the car is not really an issue

Don't think it would be very difficult to machine a pulley to fit over the outer CV joint and make up brackets to mount the alternator alongside the rear diff. As above though, no charge unless you are moving at a reasonable speed.
Or using a shorter prop shaft with a spacer made like i have on mine.

A lighter 3.8/4.2kg alternator is available from most motorsport retailers.

The biggest problem you will have will be the current draw when your not moving. Audi sport would have anderson plugged there cars to a massive battery whilst they were in the pits this would stop there batteries going flat.

This is why i am looking for a geared starter motor. I use a smaller battery saving 5kg or so. I plug the car into a larger diesel battery when it starts to save the little one.

Think about what you need running when the car is stationary?

I am going to look at mounting the alternator off input flange to the rear diff over the winter. I have had problems with alternator belts coming off due to the engine picking up revs so fast and then hitting the limiter. Its also a bit less weight over its front end as people have said.

How about an integrated flywheel alternator.
I have even seen integrated flywheel starter/generators, it was on a boat, but it could be done on an S2 I'm sure, just think the necessary weight of the flywheel being your starter and alternator.
You loose the alternator off the front and starter motor and there are no belts.

could you use a custom pulley with a large lip on it and a greater range of movement on the tensioner, so it can't actually come off the pulleys?

I've always thought about this. There is a unit availble but I'm not sure what the dimensions of 01E bell housing is. It has a max rpm rating of 5000rpm, but there might be others that have a higher rating than this.

Just thinking out loud but it could maybe be possible to use the starter as an alternator with a bit of electric trickery and removal of the slnoid. An alternator actually makes a really good motor if you take most of the control parts out of it as well which has nothing to do with this thread but fun to do nonetheless.

Aside from needing a huge inverter to run your alternator as a motor with enough power to start the engine, there is the problem of drive, you could not use the belt as it would just slip as it could not cope with the torque required for starting, it would have to be geared to the ring gear and they are not made for continuous geared engagement like that.
This then brings us to what I suggested before, an integrated flywheel starter/generator.

I was not.getting at using the alternator for starting. I was thinking of using the starter as a generator. I doubt a starter could turn at 6000 rpm times whatever the gearing between the flywheel and starter would be. Surely that would be easier to retrofit than flywheel starter generator?
