    S6 auto box problems

OK quick is it worth it question, mate is thinking of buying an S6 4.2 2001 with damaged gearbox. Only think wrong it will not select reverse all other gears work fine.

How much to change the box or recon it I imagine it's gonna be a lot but if the car is cheap it might be worth a punt

is it black by any chance?Pretty sure it will be the one thats been up forsale for ages,I was looking at it.Manual conversions have been done on them in the past(which is what i would have done to it),I bet you could get it for a grand or very near

If it's cheap enough surely it's worth a crack

I dare say you would get another box for £500 or so,you could probably buy another crashed damaged car with a good box for around the grand mark and sell the rest, seen quite a few go round that price over the last couple of years, serious amount of car for the cash

It's been on autotrader for well over a year.

                Try here for another box

the gearbox of it isnt hard to repaire by yourself , just get some v8 one from s8 or any v8 engine and and swap the inner disket kits and u have to get it with matching valve body and it would be ok , u could have bad valve body that cant hold the pressure so the reverse wont works and this can cos the reverse disk to be burned from excessive slip.

Hi Ricky , I,m a newby but I previously bought an s6 with a knackerednengine auto box.
Managed to repair it in my garage, needed a manual for it .
The gearbox is very type specific as I found out. I had the same plan to swapp boxes. There is a three digit code for the box. Audi wanted upwards of three grand to overhaul, I'd say it cost me about 500 in parts and the oil for it. Pluss the time I spent. If need more info pm me. Ohh and the box is made by zf, probably model 2f5hp24a. Manuals are hard to come by, got mine on flee bay for about 60 quid, I could sell you mine if you wanted.

Also you can tell from the dashboard lights if it's electrical or a mechanical fault on the box

Wasn't someone on here recently offering a urS6 auto box for sale recently, and if no one bought it, he was going to weigh it in for scrap value ?

I drive mine like a DSG. Seamless changes under wot.

For what its worth IF the tranny is a ZF 4HP24E or 5HP24E, call Ashcroft Transmissions. They're down in Luton and although they mainly do trannys for the Land Rover/Range Rover these guys know their stuff. I have used them twice and have nothing but good things to say about them. They don't charge movie star wages either and their work is of the best quality, unlike many regular auto-box "re-conditioners".
