vibration from the rear in higher gears

    Hi all,

My RS2 had started doing something I have noticed on 2 others RS2's I've driven before:

I get a vibration coming from the rear:

    - only in 3/4/5/6th gear at mid rpm + throttle, sort of speak at the highest torque.
    - It's a rapid vibration that I most of all feel in my back
    - at higher rpm's it's fine, so it fades out quickly in 3rd

Feels a bit like an inbalance of a wheel, but that would be felt under normal driving.
I can avoid it by shifting down a gear to get higher rpm, but when I smash it
    in 6th at 3500rpm it's quite heavy.

I've got new mounts everywhere, only rear arm bushes and the center bearing of the propshaft are original.
Could the center bearing cause this vibration under max torque?
Certainly has to be something coming from the rear.

    Many thanks!

    Steve

    Hello Steve

a few weeks ago we had the same Problem with an S2 Avant.
The Problem was a damaged Kardan shaft in the mounting zone of the diff..
Check the rear drive shafts and Kardan (Gelenke).
I think thats your problem too.
Good luck (sorry for my bad english)

    Greats Michael

Hi Michael, thanks for the input!

What exactly was wrong with the drive shaft?

      Thanks

the rear Kardan flange that is mounted on the diff was damaged.
The bushing inside was broken but complete.
I changed the complete Kardan shaft an the problem was gone..
The same noises that you describe...

Let me know if you want one. An OE one. Not a substitute...

Cheers guys. How much vertical play can the center bearing have?
Will contact you Rob if its fubar

It will be apparent if its broke but there should be a little give in it normally. When I found mine it was totally screwed.

Okay, I'm on 237.000km now so won't be looking brand new I suppose.

The thing is that I'm used to it and always put it down a gear (or 2) and then it's fine. It's the high torque at lower RPM that seems to make it vibrate.

I do still have doubt that it's the center bearing, because I don't have any vibration under normal driving or even decelleration.

Will check it anyway, but will also pay close attention the the prop CV joints, certainly the rear one to the diff.
