01E EDU VS Eurovan Tdi gearbox Durability.

I'm looking to get the 6 speed gearbox for my UrS6.
I've been searching and getting a lot of 01E gearbox infos.
it seems that the EDU 6speed gearbox is one of the best
bang for the buck while spending some more quids. i'll be able
to get some of Tdi gearbox.
The car is mainly for street purpose but maybe for some drag
race in the future so talking about the durability of the 1st gear which
the EDU gearbox has non-flex shaft. How much the EDU can withstand
some abusive launching from stanstill compared to the flex shaft on
the Tdi gearbox?is it worth to pay some more quids on the flex shaft
    gearbox?
    cheers,

Pop: The Eurovan engine is going east-west (transverse) in comparison to your AAN going North-South. I can't see how any Eurovan transmission would work.

You need the box from a longitudinal mounted engine.Or from LT van if you want to go drifting

A 2.5L diesel engine in a C4 chassis vehicle, yes.

Also B5 or C5 would also do, for example DQT.

As long as they are 01Es with 37/9 crown/pinions (4.11:1).

That is true, unless planning on changing the rear diff also. I tried the DQT in my car (4.11), worked perfectly. DQT front diff driveshaft flanges are different than on diesel box than manual UrS, so these need to be swapped also.

what about the durability between flex & non flex shaft?
                  I have a CKL(3.89) rear diff laying.if i can sort the Tdi
gearbox with 3.89,that would be nice for highway driving.

                  Zoig,
you said the driveshaft on DQT is different.Do you remember the
diameter of the flanges?I'm thinking if i'd rather get the EDU gearbox
and save the money for upgraded the 1-2 shift collar and syncros.
since the EDU is simply plug and play on the C4 chassis.that woud be
cheaper.the mostly concern is about the durability of the 1st gear on
non-flex shaft gearbox(EDU) since i'm living half of the world away.it's PITA
to import the gearbox over and over again. There's 0 chances to sort
out the 01E,016,01A manual transmission parts in my country.

Zoig what was the dqt like to drive with. I can get one locally but am scared in case the gears are too tall and make the car feel laggy. Also are the flanges an easy swap? Anything else needed doing to fit one in a urs4. Thanks des.

popdemonic, Yes, i ment the driveshaft flanges. The diesel front ones are the same size and pattern as 2.2T automatic, 2.2T manual front driveshafts have bigger diameter. Swapping them is easy, release the allen key, pull the flange and swap with existing one. I swapped the flanges from V8 manual (CMG) to the DQT, splines and everything mached, apart from the small oil pump gear(CMG) the front diffs were identical also. I didn't measure the diameter of friveshaft flanges, just compared with parts that i had at the time. I'ts hard to comment on durability, if you plan on doing a lot of drag launches you might as well get the strongest one possible (wide and flexible), but rolling starts should be fine on narrow and non-flexible gearbox.

Diesel Des, the DQT 1-3 gears are exactly the same as any 5 speed AAN gearbox, so on drag strip there is really no difference. What annoyed me was that in urban traffic i could not even use the 5th gear, 1200rpm@55km/h was not usable. Same on the road 1900rpm@100km/h(62mph), was only useful when the car was unloaded, economical though. We dont have any highways in Estonia but I imagine that the diesel box could provide quite good economy on higway at 130km/h.
On stock AAN (chipped) everything after 4th gear was dissapointing. Imagine changing from 3rd to 5th on regular 2.2T 6 speed gearbox and you might get the idea
Roughly comparing the DQT box to CMG i'm running now then 1-2 are identical, 3rd is 1.23 vs 1.32 so hard to notice, 4th in DQT was roughly the same as 5th in CMG, 5th in DQT 0.67 is paractically identical to 6th in CMG 0.68. DQT 6th is 0.56.

Zoig@bought AAN automatic S6 several years ago, found out that the automatic is useless. Rebult CMG + DQT to one good condition DQT box. Converted the automatic to manual with DQT, didnt like it in the long run. Sold the DQT and bought another CMG, so far really happy with CMG ratios.

so much impressive for the infos Zoig.it seems you have been playing around with lot of gearbox.i also converted from automatic to manual too.

i have 3 of 4HP-18FLA Automatic box laying around with the automatic driveshaft.it's sound like i got a couple of alternatives on choosing the gearboxes.

I'm living in Thailand which normally i drive this car in town and heavy traffic right here.that's why i'm not worried that much on miles per gallon.

which Diesel gearbox code would you recommend on my case.i found couple of 01E diesel gearboxes from various engine and chassis.i still couldn't make

                        my mind on this.

                        Cheers,

Zoig thanks for the feedback. I think the dqt would be ideal for Germany on the autobahn but it might be a bit tall for the uk. 80mph or just under 130kmh is about the max you can get away with if your carefull here and that would be 2.5k rpm from what you are saying. Could you confirm that. I can make almost 1 bar boost at that rpm so maybe it would be useable with my gtx2867r . Do you notice a big step in the gears driving normally eg from third into 4th etc.

                          Cheers des

popdemonic, AFAIK the automatic driveshafts were shorter than manual ones, also thinner. I doubt they are of any use. Still you could use the deiveshafts from manual Diesel 01E, they should fit properly with the diesel box (have not tested though).
The diesel boxes i have come across all have more or less the same ratios, mostly the difference is with main drive, some have 35/7. For town use i'd recommend V8 box, 4-5-6 are a bit longer than 2.2T box, but they are allready hard to find in Europe, i imagine they are virtually non existant in Thailand. But like i said before, if you are not planning on regular drag launches and abuse then there should be no real world difference, TDI box from C4, C5, B5, Passat B5 would all do, just make sure the main ratio matches rear diff.

Diesel_des, this is a picture of my car with the Diesel box in 6th gear. 80mph might actually suit it, provided the car is not loaded much. I'd say it was about 2200rpm-2300rpm but i could be wrong - we dont have any roads where this speed is legal.

Only time i noticed big step going from 3rd to 4th was during the One Mile Challenge race i attended, in first 500m i was done with first 3 gears and floored it in 4th for rest of the mile, trap speed was 200km/h@6500rpm-ish if i remember correctly. 5th gear would be more than enough to attack 300kmh speed, 6th could even reach 400kmh
In normal granpa-mode there was no noticeable step.

                              I'm running DQT gearbox.
With 2.2L engine it was not so great driving around with quite big turbo (hx40s). There was no power at 2000rpm.
With 2.5L engine it is a lot better, because i have much more torque in the lower end. Driving around in 55-60kmh it has about 1600-1800rpm.
Here is a graph for DQT gear ratios. It is in Estonian language but i think everybody will understand it, because number are numbers.
