    Rear diff dismantle

Is it possible to pull apart the rear diff without any special skills or tools?

I want to do a thorough clean on the housing and would prefer if I could strip it down.

Yea its not difficult, if I could do it, you certainly can do it.

But I was replacing seals too. I dont think you can remove the diff lock mechanism with the big seal in place.

Thanks, I rememeber seeing that thread. Did you get everthing out of the diff though, including the pinion shaft?

I rebuilt mine when i put the plated diff in.

Cost something like ÂŁ400 in bearings, seals, hot tank and i also welded and removed the diff lock arm when i was at it. Saved another ÂŁ50 worth of parts

Was it as simple as open it up and pull the bits out once the covers were off? I won't be replacing the bearings, just a clean up and new seals.

To be honest don't open it unless your going to check it all over and replace the bearings

No I didnt remove the pinion shaft, it seemed perfect , I didnt want to risk damaging the bearings removing it.

Well, I might just do the seals and give it a steam clean. There were no noises coming from it, so I'll save the bigger job for when it's needed.

James out of interest how did you counter hold the pinion shaft to undo that beast nut on the nose of it?

Welded a tool up with a bar and some teeth to hold the pinion, then brought the 35mm socket and used a very very large bar!

Could be some interest in hiring that tool

I looked at that nut the other night and thought, I'm never going to get that bast*rd off

I think you might get away with a buzz gun and the wheels on the floor.
