    URS4 rear diff wear

    Hi all,

I m actually stripping the rear subframe of my Urs4 and I was wondering if it would be a good a idea to change the rear diff for a younger one?

The current one is stock with 430000km on the clock so it is quite old, but there are no sounds coming from it or anything.

I just tried to turn the input shaft and observed that the output axles (with the diff off the car) are turning at different speed when I turn the input shaft in one direction. Though they turn at same speed when I turn the input shaft the other way.

Now I know that there is some internal losses which might not be the same for both sides and they do not influence anything (the torque of my hand and free output axles mean nothing compared to engine and wheel torque). Furthermore I know that I should not change something that works.

I was just planing on changing the oil (which has never been changed) clean the outside and nothing more.

    What would you do?

    Thanks!

    Hugues.

On a different note, if your stripping the rear of the car this much remove and clean and paint the fuel tank.... don't ask me how I know...

      Thank you
It was planned actually as it has already been changed once near 200000km and rust is coming back again!

If its quite and not leaking leave it alone. Fresh oil cant hurt but good luck in getting the drain plug out

You are right! The one at the rear is stuck for a lifetime, I could only get the front one out.
