Yep its always best to hold it on the handbrake so the slack is taken out of everything.
Having the rear diff locked will put more force into the shafts as it has to spin both to unload rather than just one.Comment

well, i have yet to break mine, but they were custom made for me, and Janis broke a few of these as well. but i think that was due to him still running a Torsen center diff and being a MADMAN! (fasterthenRS2) the power must have modulated front-to-rear and back enough to shock them. but i have never had an issue as of yet.
mine setup is now Wavetrac front diff, always been on a welded center diff, and always been on a locked rear. just went to the Wavetrac when i built the dogbox last year, and it is holding up fine and so are the axles. i actually got Janis' full set as backups for mine if ever i have an issue even.

i launch on the two step with NO PRELOADING at all, no hand brake or staging brake action. i slip the clutch out and have made to date a best of 1.400 60' time. on 4 slicks. launching at ~6200 rpm. and leaving the line at 15-16 psi. car weighs only ~2900 pounds at the time. its less now

I use audi b2 typ85 rear driveshafts and audi 200 hubs (447 407 615a) with audi d2 bearings.This is not straight fit
.So far not break any and doing around 1.6-1.7s 60ft on street tyres. My central diff welded and rear diff always locked on switch.Self driveshafts slightly twisted ,so I waiting for stronger ones to be made for me.I will do same in front. In foto is one off my spare driveshaft and hubs for front
