    S4 B5 6-speed into S2 ABY

    Hi

I may have the opportunity to pick up a damaged 1999 S4 as a transmission donor for my S2, the S2 having a slightly grumbly 1st gear

Would rather replace it now, than wait for an eventual failure of the old trans

Is there anything at all I would need to change as part of the swap, or is it as simple as remove one box and fit the other?

    Any advice appreciated

While the Europeans and Brits are sleeping (2:29 AM in the UK now), I will add that the B5 S4 01E 6 spd with the 0.68 sixth gear is *the* upgrade for the C4 UrS4/S6 folks not wanting to pony up for a good CRB RS2 six-speed. For the C4 UrS there are no real issues other than one of the alignment dowels needs changing/removal and the linkage from the C4 UrS needs to be swapped onto the B5 01E S4 6spd. For those with ProConTen, the game is over but that is probably not an issue anyway (most UrSs came with at least driver's side air bags).

Based on the compatibility of the S2 and RS2 transmissions with the C4 UrS AAN and the 01E B5 S5 transmission working on the UrS, I can imagine that there are no show stoppers to swap a B5 S4 01E into an S2.

The Brits and Europeans can correct me, *if* I am wrong, when they wake from their beauty sleep.

do I have any issues with final drive ratios, though?

Pretty much a straight swap into an ABY S2, except one of the bolts for the linkage bracket on top of the gearbox needs a spacer as the casing is slightly different. Be aware that the DSY / EDU boxes (B5 S4 6Spd boxes) often have syncro issues later in life so with checking these before you go to the trouble of swapping boxes

Thanks. I know the former owner of the donor car, and he has told me that although the turbos were starting to get tired he felt the trans did not have any faults. He actually imported the S4 himself when he returned from working in the UK in 2010, and it is showing 109,000 miles.

The only other query that is in the back of my mind is that I am not sure if my 1994 S2 Sedan might also have Procon-10 (as well as driver's airbag). I believe there was a short period when both systems were fitted to some cars. Apparently I would have to remove the Procon-10 (if that is the case), as the S4 trans does not have the mounting points for it on the centre casting

            The donor (maybe):

The final drive ratios are the same and 4.11 to 1, i.e. 37 tooth crown and 9 tooth pinion.

1994 is likely to have ProConTen. You don't have to remove the cables (just leave them but know they aren't doing anything) *OR* you can figure out a method to hold the ProConTen bracket the is bolted to the top of your existing transmission to the B5 S4 transmission.

Removing the procon system is no big loss to be honest. ....or you could fit a replacement quarter panel and boot lid and have a noggy blue S4 to drive

Already got a black S4 the same year with blood-red special-build leather by quattro GmbH Probably not every man's cup-of-tea, but it's sorta funky, and was ordered for a fan of the local rugby team, whose colours are red and black, so there's a bit of history there! Two of them would be problematic

Anyway, back to the drawing board, for now, since some idiot paid $3500 NZD at auction for the wreck. You can buy a good complete S4 here for $7000, and the damaged noggy was pretty rough even pre-accident!!

Somebody wanted that drivetrain real bad - or else they are dumb enough to think it is a worthwhile rebuild. The cost of the paperwork alone to re-comply it in this country would be close to $1000, and that's on top of the repair cost ... and it has tired turbos

Charlie Smith was a great Audi and Porsche enthusiast who put up the original Audi Page(s) to share info, particularly about the 01E, that he gathered from various sources and contributors. Charlie passed away last year and before the pulled the plug on his server, a fellow, EdDiGreg, from my home forum mirrored Charlie's Audi Pages and pull them on his (EdDiGreg's) 12v.org/urs server with this "home" page: http://12v.org/urs/charlie_smith/

I trust you believe us now that a B5 S4 6spd DSY (or EDU) transmission will work in your car.

good work on saving his material, but when did I ever suggest that I did not "believe you"?
