CGR gearbox. Straight cut 1.st gear or something wrong?

Hello i just got a S2 avant yesterday with a CGR gearbox and it has a squealing noise in 1.st gear only. Is the 1.st gear straigt cut or is there something wrong?

To a certain extent, they can be quite noisy in first with higher miles. Best to avoid hard starts but maybe some new oil will be a good start.

There are two possibilities, neither of them is pretty:

            1. Somebody was playing too hard and did some high RPM launches that chipped off some of the 1st geat teeth. This is called "galling". And it is (gauling that is)

            2. The pinion bearings were over tight when installed and they are failing.

Here is some reading for you:

Hej.

HÄber du finder en go' løsning pÄ problemet

For the non-Danish speakers on this English language forum:

"Hello. My S4 also has a first-gear which is noisy - It sounds almost as if it is running in reverse. I think the best solution would be to find a used gearbox for example in Germany and Sweden. In the meantime, I recommend that you at least possible burden on the gear so that it does not go completely kaput.

For oil, it is the G 052 911 A2 from VAG if you do not want to buy the oil by dealers(expensive), so you can buy Castrol Syntrans Transaxle 75W-90 (VW-TL 501.50), and Castrol's is, as far as I know, exactly the same as the VAG. Hope you find a good solution to the problem. Good summer from here. "

Here is a pic from UrS4 V8 (GMG MY1993) that i had. Gauling is clearly seen in here. Can't comment on the noise as I bought and kept the box as spares.
Later model B5 V6 TDI (DQT MY2000) had wide first gear and was free from this problem, mainshaft surfaces looked brand new.

Thanks for the photo. I have blown it up in the area of the galling so you can better see the pitting that has developed. I have seen photos (somewhere) where chips have spalled off the gear teeth, no pitting.

Please bear in mind we know of lots of gearboxes on here having developed this problem and other than the noise nothing has come of it.

Saying that I have probably just cursed my luck and mine will fail now!

So i just have to drive it till it breakes? The previous owner told me that it has been like this the 5 years he got it. I am don't make full rpm launches. If i just do quick "smooth" starts i don't need to be worried?

If you loose the 1st gear you at least know why, if not then you know why it makes that sound. It aint broken yet = dont fix it
